Participate in National ASC Week ASCA can help you host your members of Congress August 8–12 BY DANIELLE KASTER
F
or the past decade, ASCA has helped ASCs across the country to open their doors on National ASC Day and educate the public and key policymakers on the high-quality, cost-efficient care that ASCs provide to millions of Amer- icans each year. This year, ASCA will celebrate National ASC Week, August 8–12, to help ASCs increase awareness and host facility tours.
ASCA encourages all of its mem-
bers to invite their elected officials and policymakers for a facility tour during National ASC Week. “Legislators aren’t always aware of what a complex organi- zation an ASC is,” says Andrew Weiss, president of the New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, “ . . . the
face time with our physicians and staff opens up dialogue and reinforces our industry’s concerns regarding anything that would limit patient access and the sustainability of our center.”

“Hosting an event with your member of Congress for National ASC Week is instrumental in building relationships with senators and representatives,” says Kristin Murphy, assistant director of Government Affairs at ASCA. “Getting them into an ASC so they can see first- hand the high quality, cost-efficient care can heavily influence their decisions to cosponsor key health care legislation.” While ASCA provides assistance in coordinating facility tours year- round, the mass effort of National ASC Week allows Congress and the public to hear the strengthened voice of the ASC community. ASCs that are unable to host a facility tour during National ASC Week are encouraged to find another time during the year to meet with their members of Congress. Facility
tours for policymakers
are not the only way to participate in National ASC Week. In previous years, many facilities have opened their doors to other residents of their communities to offer them an opportunity to learn more about ASCs and promote aware- ness of the health care services that ASCs provide. To ensure that each facility is pre- pared for its National ASC Week event, ASCA provides materials that include issue briefs, talking points and invita- tion templates.
