Give the Gift of Health

Join PIH and ASCA to provide surgical services to those in need BY AMBER GAUMNITZ

Around the world, two bil- lion people lack access to surgical care and many more struggle to find and pay for it, according to an article in

the June 2015 issue of The Lancet. The poorest third of the world’s pop- ulation receives less than 4 percent of all surgical services, according to a June 2011 World Health Organization report. The impact is devastating on impover- ished nations. And every day, Partners In Health (PIH), a global health non- profit, headquartered in Boston, Massa-

chusetts, (www.pih.org), strives to fight this tragedy, bringing high-level surgi- cal care where it is most needed—from Haiti to Rwanda and around the world. In 2015, the ASCA Foundation Board approved a formal partnership between PIH and the

ASCA

Foundation. Through this partnership, the Foundation and individual ASCA members have an opportunity to help support the delivery of health care services to many thousands of people who otherwise would not be able to obtain the care they need.

ASCA started working with PIH in

2014. In the beginning, following the successful donation of an important piece of equipment to a Haitian hospi- tal made by one of ASCA’s corporate members, ASCA thought that large and small equipment donations from the ASC community would be the best way to help support PIH in its mission. After extended conversations with PIH and others, however, ASCA recognized that the most effective way for the ASC community to support PIH would be by providing financial support.

PIH’s History and Mission Paul Farmer, MD, founded PIH as a global health nonprofit in 1987.
