This will backfire and put the body into defense mode where the muscles will harden and tighten in order to avoid further injury. The goal of massage and body-work is to alleviate pain and discomfort through relaxing of the entire body and muscles. If it is someone’s first time receiving massage or body-work, that person may not know what a comfortable pressure is for them. Communicating with the therapist during the treatment about what feels comfortable and what does not is very important to help establish rapport between the therapist and client so that the body-work session brings about healing and not harm.
