Marc van Heyningen Appointed as New COO Damen Shipyards Group
As of April 1st, Marc van Heyningen became the new Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Damen Shipyards
Group. This completes the Executive Board of the leading Dutch maritime solutions provider.
“We warmly welcome Marc on board,” said CEO Arnout Damen. “With his experience and background, he is certainly able to take operational excellence within our company to an even higher level.”
Marc is a MSc in Civil Structural Engineering at Delft University and has spent the vast majority of his career working for Fluor Corporation in various general and operations management positions in, for example, The Netherlands, The UK, India and the USA. His last role was Vice President of Operations based in Fluor Company Headquarters in Dallas, Texas. “I very much look forward to joining the Damen team and working to strengthen project execution and quality of delivery.”
Mr Van Heyningen is the successor to Jan-Wim Dekker, who started as Chief Commercial Officer on 1 January. In addition to Mr Damen, Mr Dekker and Mr Van Heyningen, Andreas Fluhrer (Chief Transformation Officer), Tom Touber (Chief Financial Officer) complete the board.
PD Ports Welcomes UK Government’s Freeports Consultation
Port operator PD Ports has welcomed the UK government’s announcement to launch a public consultation on freeports with the aim to award ten locations special trade status by the end of 2020.
PD Ports operates at thirteen locations across the country and owns Teesport, one of the busiest UK ports and an international gateway to the north of the UK.
Teesport bosses have lobbied in recent years to highlight the potential benefits of freeports in supporting future trade growth, with the port chosen by the government to announce the Free Ports Commission in August 2019.
PD Ports has described Teesport as “the northern gateway” for international trade, an ideal location to build on its history of delivering portcentric activity, backed by an available land bank and skilled labour pool to support further growth.
Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman Jerry Hopkinson believes there is no better case than Teesport for freeport status and commented:
“In our view, there really is no better case than Teesport. We have one of the deepest rivers in the UK and can take some of the world’s biggest ships. Depending on the cargo, we think the River Tees can handle more than 80m tonnes.”

Hospital Boat Solution to Coronavirus Crisis?
Given the Covid19 outbreak, world governments are looking at how fast a pandemic can lead to a severe shortage of isolation beds. Could the answer be a quickly deployed, modular and expandable hospital vessel?
Capt Sondre Sandbye said, “Alego Development’s 36m by 19m catamaran has three enclosed decks with around 20 operating rooms and treatment facilities”
The bow has a broad access ramp and an area for a fast-response paramedic vehicle. Below, the twin hulls each hold a pair of diesel/biofuel gensets and as there’s a focus on low emissions the boat is a hybrid, the batteries also providing emergency power for the hospital if a shore connection isn’t available. Above is an upper open half-deck and optional heli-pad.
However, the big difference between this and other hospital vessels is that it can be modified according to need. The trick is that it is based on 40ft hi-cube containers: that even goes for the hull, which can be modified by unfastening and introducing a few more sections, all without dry-docking – power is increased by additional propulsion modules.
Though not for offshore operation, Sandbye explained it could be moored up in ports or harbours or even on inland waterways.
