Malling Mail GP practice “closes its doors”
THE spread of coronavirus has prompted West Malling GP practice to close its doors to walk-in patients. The three surgeries at Kings Hill, Leybourne and West Malling, which make up the practice, say they are no longer open for face to face GP appointments.
Only patients who have phoned ahead and discussed their symptoms with staff, will be allowed to visit for a consultation.
It is the latest measure to stem the rapid infection rate of a respiratory illness which has sparked panic across the world. The practice’s announcement came just days after it moved out of Milverton House, its High Street surgery for
many decades. Two consulting rooms for a GP and a nurse have been established at the Hollies annexe facing the surgery door, between 8.30am and 6pm from Monday to Friday. But there is no receptionist.
Leybourne Surgery opens from 8.15am to 6pm, with three consulting rooms on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And Kings Hill Surgery is open Monday to Friday, with 16 consulting rooms on two floors, with lift access. However, the practice stresses that, until further notice, patients should not turn up unless they have been vetted over the phone by staff beforehand.
Hit and run
POPULAR police and community safety officer Mandy Harris was one of three pedestrians seriously injured in a hit and run on the West Malling High Street crossing.
She is recovering from two broken leg bones and a broken nose, but reports she is “feeling better” following the incident, which happened at around 4pm on Wednesday, March 11. Police say a black or blue Ford Fiesta came from West Street and turned left into High Street, knocking over the pedestrians, before driving away down Swan Street. It was later found in East Malling. Officers have viewed images from the two borough council CCTV cameras which overlook the site, at the crossing itself and at the Swan Street junction. Parish council chairman Trudy Dean said: “People are naturally worried. Once we have the police report, we will decide whether further action is needed to improve the safety at the crossing, or strengthen the existing 20mph limit and illuminated crossing signs”.
LIDL
EAST Malling and Larkfield Parish Council has objected to the application for a LIDL store on highway grounds. The County Council, which is the highways authority, has not yet responded. However, its comments will be crucial as the Borough Council
relies on them for assessing the traffic impact of all applications. It does not look as though this application will be going to the planning committee for decision before at least the April meeting.
