A break from the border


The Irish have greeted the news that there is to be no border on the island with relief, but the outcome of the Brexit talks and what it will mean for trade remains clouded in uncertainty. Meanwhile, it’s booming business as usual for the freight industry.

Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein’s strong performance in the 9 February Irish election has certainly set the cat among the political pigeons. Leſt -wing Sinn Fein surprised everyone by winning the highest number of votes, even though it fi elded fewer candidates than the


established Fianna Fail and Fine Gael parties. However, its smaller number


of candidates meant that it did not end up with the largest number of seats; Sinn Fein had 37 seats - an increase of 14 on 2016 – one behind Fianna Fáil but two ahead of the governing Fine Gael


party, led by Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach (prime minister). Sinn Fein may thus have


ended the Fine Gael- Fianna Fáil hegemony that has dominated politics in Ireland for so long, but it could herald a period of instability as two of the three main parties attempt to forge a coalition. There have even been


suggestions that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil could themselves form a


coalition, Sinn Fein’s


leſt -leaning politics and links to political violence during the Irish troubles are unlikely to make it a coalition partner of choice for either of the other two parties. With a new Irish government


still not formed at the time of


writing in late February,


commentators were meanwhile suggesting that fresh election could be called in April in an attempt to break the deadlock. Sinn Fein appears to be
