Showing Preparation with Jayne Ross

etting ready to show needn’t be stressful but preparation is key! Seven times HOYS Supreme Champion Jayne Ross, sponsored by Absorbine®, has some great advice to make sure everything will run smoothly.

G

The number one rule is to think of every eventuality and plan ahead. Make a list of all the items you need, from the patently obvious like your saddle and bridle, to grooming supplies, hay net and hat to coloured string to secure your competition number. Go through your list and check off each item as you load it in your horsebox. Put together a route planner and allow yourself enough time, plus contingency for your journey.

Pulling manes and tails, trimming or hogging a couple of weeks before the show means that you can simply tidy up the day before the event, leaving you time for all the other jobs. You will have plenty to do without having to think about a full mane and tail pulling session! Another time saving idea is to start washing out stains well in advance, especially if your horse is a grey. When bathing use ShowSheen® 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner. It is effective yet gentle and stops the horse’s skin becoming scurfy.

The day before an event, bathe your horse and make sure whiskers, ears and tails are trimmed and the final mane pulling is complete, ready to plait in the morning. Don’t forget if you have a cob you will need to make sure heels are trimmed too.

Jayne recommends that you plait on the day of the event. There is nothing worse than spending hours carefully plaiting the day before only to find your horse has rubbed them out overnight, spoiling the look and possibly damaging their mane. Jayne sews her plaits in as sewn plaits are neater and they achieve the best look to enhance the shape of the horse’s neck.

Always allow plenty of time in the morning for plaiting and last-minute leg and tail cleaning. Your horse will inevitably get some stains overnight, whether out in the field or in his stable. A good tip for quick and easy white legs and tails is Show- Sheen’s Stain Remover & Whitener, because it lifts dirt and removes any yellow stains, meaning less stress whilst preparing in the morning!
