My 12

Ex-racehorses & Thoroughbreds by Jo Sellars

A mad!

All my horses have come straight from racing and then been re-schooled slowly at the pace they have needed, or from a racing stud as I am blessed to have 2 adorable foals. Some were our syndicate racehorses and some I rode out daily in training so they had to come to me when retired - soft touch I am!

Mowbray has been an incredible horse who loves Showjumping and has been my main horse for many years jumping at BSJA level, before enjoying a quieter life at the age of 24. Now he loves having all winter to eat and sleep, he still competes all Spring/Summer and has had a successful last 3 years at the ROR National Championships held at Aintree Racecourse. Mowbray has won the 1 metre SJ class four years in a row at the Regional Championships.

s an owner of 12 ex-racehorses/ Thoroughbreds must mean I have the bug or am completely

Saucy Buck, Carmens Concertio and Nobodies Business also have been fabulous horses competing at local and county shows at showing and dressage with good records. They’ve also also had highs at the ROR National Championships, the ROR Regional Championships and the dressage ROR Championships held at Blenheim!

Out Of The Storm, bought from a Epsom based trainer for £50 as a gangly 3 year old filly just from racing, has turned out to be a fabulous mare who has many placings to her name at local and championship level. The buzzy small mare at 15.1 hands loves sj and is so keen and sometimes too keen.

With some greener horses still to come through the re-training process I have a busy Summer planned full of various shows at different levels. I wouldn’t have another breed of horse, as an ex-racehorse can turn their hoof to anything with the right time, love and care.

My syndicate racehorses - Standing Strong and Jumerigh Liberty were not the best racehorses on the track, both were tried over the flat and hurdles. Eventually both retired and came to live with me alongside previous syndicate racehorse Ashmolian who I had a soft spot for when I worked in racing. All the boys have taken to showjumping, x-country and also arena eventing, some easier and quicker than others.

Ashmolian took a long time as mentally he struggled with any pressure in the re-training process or at shows; he would go backwards and all the hard work was undone, I found the ROR clinics held were real game changers for him. I like to do a variety of things with my horses and none are over worked and all go out every day to be a horse/mud monster. I love the fact all my horses were bred to race and with time and a chance they all do a second job and can do this as well as horses bred or bought for that job.
