LIVE 24-SEVEN

it’s as good as it can be. It’s going to reflect a lot of the new album, but also some of the old songs, bringing together something that’s really musical. There will be those we’ve rehearsed, but there’s also room for things to change, so it’s going to be full of that energy and also musicality.

Performing is second nature to you, but does a tour take that to another dimension, as it’s really all about you delivering night after night? If that makes sense? Well yes and no, because songs are part of you, but they’re also about the fans. People have paid money and it’s not only about that if they’ve committed their time, leaving behind Netflix and the house in the winter to come out to a concert – I think they then feel the song is a big part of them as well. So, when I go out there I don’t think, ‘Oh this is my song you’re hearing’ – I think we’re sharing something; I think you’re only as good as the audience that’s there as well, they are magic of it really!

Do you think that your broadcasting work helps you to keep your creative process fresh? Absolutely yeah and you’ve kind of answered the question for me, because during that time of representing the radio show you meet so many people and it’s really inspired this continual inspiration loop, so meeting old masters and new young geniuses – it’s all very, very inspiring for me and just a joyful thing really!

I watched Randy Crawford recently and she walked out on stage and belted out tracks note perfect like a 20-year-old Randy Crawford… Great, superb!

Is there anyone you would love to work with that has so far evaded you that you think would be a nice combination? Yeah, there are lots! Of course I worked with Pharrell in my twenties and we had a brilliant time, but I feel like I would have made so much more of it now because I’m so much more confident, so I’d like to revisit that one because we were on the cusp of doing

something really exciting, but we didn’t have enough time. I’d like to be in the same room as Tom White – that would be amazing! Yes! Yes! Q-Tip did something with Norah Jones, so maybe something there. I love this guy Danger Mouse as well, he’s done some great stuff, a great album with Broken Bells – he’s an incredible producer. Songwriters, gosh there are so many, I think there’s an extraordinary amount of talent out there these days. I like Beth, I think she’s amazing! I think there’s some great young talent – Tame Impala – we’re not short of things to listen to today right? We’re really not now!

You’ve said this album is like love letters to your wife; with this in mind, if I had a husband as talented as you who could jump on a piano and produce sounds like you do, I would believe that everything you wrote and performed was just for me [laughing]! What has Sophie’s reaction been to the album? I think she’s just really proud that I’ve written about issues that I’ve had in life that are quite challenging and produced something that was very honest and vulnerable. I think vulnerability and being more emotional are not necessarily things that men, especially when I was growing up, were seen as a good quality, I know younger men now are more used to talking about their feelings, but I think for me it was something I had to learn as a grown-up. It’s interesting that our lives and our marriage are not really wound up in what we do so much for a living and I think that probably comes from having young kids – I mean she loves my music and she’s really proud of me, but it doesn’t play that much of a part in our day to day life! I THINK [Laughing]!

That’s most likely the recipe for success ‘cos let’s face it – work can get in the way! Logistically it does of course, like with a tour and I’m not too sure I’ve still got the hang of that with family life, but this tour is very much designed to allow me to have a functional family life as well – you know, I don’t tour weekends and it’s very much a tour that puts family first!
