CE L EBRIT Y INTERVI EW JAMI E CUL LUM
LIVE 24-SEVEN “ 12 IT’S GOING TO REFLECT A LOT OF THE NEW
ALBUM, BUT ALSO SOME OF THE OLD SONGS, BRINGING TOGETHER SOMETHING THAT’S REALLY MUSICAL.
in your life, you just feel like being more open and a bit more vulnerable – it feels quite scary, but it feels like you’re willing to go there. You’re will to get your hands dirty! So, this has been a hands dirty album! Dirty hands it is…hands dirty is good! [laughing].
I’m a similar age to you. We’re not old – never let that be said – but don’t you think that as we get slightly older we do get that freedom we only wish we’d embraced before? Yes, but I think that’s a kind of ongoing process isn’t it? When you do speak to someone who is older in their seventies or eighties, they say yes I’m much more open and I don’t care what anyone thinks anymore, then I saw one in their forties interviewed the other day and they said, ‘As soon as I hit my forties I just didn’t care what people think’ …really, really? It’s probably not true is it! [laughing] You still care about what people think, you still have insecurities – it’s actually that you’ve just reached a normal part of life, it’s just existing and it’s not weird to think that. Everyone’s a bit fucked up, everyone is a bit confused and has had weird and confusing things happen to them, pain, tragedy and stuff – you just get a bit better at contextualizing it all rather than thinking, ‘Oh everyone I see on Instagram is fine, why am I the only one who’s freaking out?’ you know!
Jamie, before we talk about the tour, I wanted to touch on the album and I have to say that the sound is incredible; personally, I love Drink, Usher and Monster, but Endings are Beginnings… if it was a talent competition you’d win the voice of the year with Endings are Beginnings! Tell us about the inspiration behind the album? It’s interesting that you touch on Endings are Beginnings because that sums up quite a lot of the process of the album; it’s very much more kind of personal and intimate than anything I’ve ever done before. Endings Are Beginnings is recorded entirely by myself at home on my piano in my studio, you know I didn’t record the piano and then the vocals, I had my notebook in front of me and I’d just written the song and I was singing very quietly actually, I wasn’t projecting my voice or anything like that. I was singing very closely and intimately into the microphone. I think that sums up quite a lot about the way this album was done. It was written in a very personal, specific way and I was aiming to write the stuff, well that was very ‘necessary’ for me. There were feelings that I needed to externalise that maybe 10 years ago I wouldn’t have been bold enough to say out loud. I think a lot of stuff probably comes with age and the different period you’re in
Taller – you say that with the album you’re ‘owning’ issues with life in general in a way you’ve never done before, but also the track itself maybe a tongue- in-cheek nod to the fact that at times having a statuesque wife has been touched on… For me, that track…the title is cheeky! Obviously people will think about that when they hear that title, I guess it sums up what the whole album is about, which is being in a long-term relationship and what you’re forced to face if you are to successfully stay and be with someone; you have a giant mirror held up to you and you’re forced to look at yourself, warts and all. During that process you can really grow quite a lot and for me it’s about growing towards the person, but also yes, an opportunity to poke fun at the idea that it wasn’t written about other things at all in the first place.
Many would say that you’re at your finest live, there’s something magical about the energy created by someone who can play the hell out of the keys and sing equally well. What can people expect from you from this tour? It’s funny, it’s been a while since I toured in this country, I’ve toured in many other countries recently, but it’s been a while here. I gave the UK a bit of a break and I’m really excited to be doing a full tour like this. I think it’s sold out, so it’s going to be great. To do it at this level and the lovely concert spaces we have and I have an incredible band –
