spot prices that
can be booked immediately. These are now automatically generated in real time via the Rapid Rate Response (RRR) mechanism and are displayed as directly bookable offers. “With automated spot
prices, we can make our customers

Port of Corpus Christi Closes 2019 with
Record Tonnage
The Port of Corpus Christi ended 2019 with record tonnages for December of 13.8 million metric cargo tons and 122.2 million metric cargo tons for the entire year — a 16-million- ton improvement
over 2018
tonnages. The significant growth is attributed to increases in energy exports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Growth in crude exports is
primarily the result of two new crude pipelines from the largest energy producing fields in the United States, the Permian Basin. The Plains All-American Cactus II and EPIC pipelines were brought
online in Q3-2019 and helped clinch a record fourth quarter of 37.5 million metric tons, a 17% increase over the previous record set in the third quarter of 2019. Year over year gains in crude production led to an impressive 26.8% jump in crude exports from the Port of Corpus Christi. Liquefied natural gas or
exports, LNG, of increased
6.6 million tons overall (the equivalent
316.8 billion
cubic feet) in 2019 as a result of Cheniere Energy subsidiary Corpus Christi Liquefaction increasing production with the
USA (California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska), Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Cologne and Stuttgart. The Port of Virginia® set a new annual record for container cargo volume having handled more than 2.93 million TEUs, in calendar year 2019, a 3% increase over last year’s total. The port saw increases in the movement of loaded imports, up 3%; empty export TEUs, up 10%; growth in barge volume, up more than 18%; and the amount of cargo moving over Richmond Marine Terminal, up 19.5%. Truck volumes were up 2% and rail volume was static. South Carolina Ports Authority had its best calendar year in its history, handling 2.44 million TEUs in 2019, a 5% increase year-over- year.

During the December meeting of the JAXPORT Board of Directors, the Board unanimously voted to extend CEO Eric Green’s contract through fiscal year 2024. The new five-year contract is effective Oct. 1, 2019. Green has been with JAXPORT since 2005 and was named CEO in 2017. Under Green’s leadership, the port set new container, auto and overall cargo volume records.
As Port Everglades’ 5th largest trading partner, Colombia’s largest port along the Caribbean Sea, the Port of Barranquilla, has agreed to enter into an MOU to promote bilateral trade. Port Everglades’ trade with Colombia has increased by 29% over the last four years. Port Everglades also signed a MOU with the Dominican Republican Port Authority as part of a joint Sister Seaports agreement.
As Port Everglades’ largest trading partner in 2018, the Dominican Republic Port Authority has agreed to enter into an MOU to promote bilateral trade. Trade between Port Everglades and the Dominican Republic increased by 6.11% in 2018, according to World City’s 2019 Port Everglades Trade Numbers publication. Five years ago, the Dominican Republic ranked as the 5th largest trading partner for Port Everglades, but it has since held the number one position for four straight years.
The Laurentia Project at the Port of Quebec, one of the most significant port expansions on the east coast, is in the planning stages. The project is a strategic game changer that will set a new standard of intermodal logistics. By creating a new North American deep- water gateway, Laurentia will greatly enhance the competitiveness of the Saint Lawrence River and the Great Lakes corridor. The capital investment plan includes a deal with Hutchison Ports and CN Rail to develop a new $775 million deep water container terminal, Laurentia.
The Port of Hamburg saw seaborne cargo handling in the first nine months of 2019 increase 3.2% to 104 million tons, exceeding those figures from major competing ports in Northern Europe where increases averaged around 1%. The port handled 7 million TEUs, up 6.9%, compared to the 0.7% points in competition with other major container ports, whose growth averaged 3.4%. Rail particularly boosted seaport-hinterland services. Transporting 2.1 million TEU in the first nine months, these attained 11.9% growth.

For the first time in its 92-year history, a woman has been named Port Attorney at the Port of Oakland. The Port’s governing Board last night appointed Michele Heffes as the head of its in-house Legal Department. Ms. Heffes succeeds Danny Wan, the prior Port Attorney, who became the Port’s Executive Director Nov. 14. A 31-year Port veteran, Ms. Heffes had been Interim Port Attorney while the Board sought Mr. Wan’s replacement.
