GPA Rolls with Ro/Ro By Karen E. Thuermer
Georgia Port Authority keeps the cargo rolling. That includes roll-on/roll-off cargo. In Fiscal Year 2019, the GPA’s Port of Brunswick handled a total of nearly 614,000 units of ro/ro cargo, an increase of 4%, or 23,000 units. Including the 36,000 units moved via Ocean Terminal in Savannah, Georgia is the second busiest hub for the import-export of vehicles, machinery and
other types of ro/ro cargo in the United States. The Port of Savannah hosts
35 weekly container ship calls, while nine ocean carriers call on Colonel’s Island at the Port of Brunswick. The Port of Brunswick
handles a number of top selling brands for auto manufacturers. Recently, BMW signed a new 20- year contract to move
vehicles through the Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal. Colonel’s Island Terminal,
the single largest autoport in North America, offers three modern ro/ro berths and three on-terminal auto processors. The port services more than 60 auto-heavy
cargo
equipment manufactures. The German carmaker
has tapped Georgia Ports for vehicle logistics since 1988. In the last 15 years, BMW has
moved 612,000 vehicles via Brunswick.
Supply Chain Advantages Last

Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) began exporting its Telluride 8-person SUV for global markets via the Port of Brunswick. The first Telluride vehicles were loaded for export onto the ro/ro vessel in February 2019 and were shipped to ports around the Arabian Peninsula.

“Through continuous

reach the Port of Brunswick, International Auto Processing inspects the vehicles, washes and applies wrap guard, installs tow hooks and adjusts tire pressure, among other services. Ocean carrier Glovis transports the vessels overseas. The auto manufacturer
also builds vehicles for the domestic market in their West Point, Georgia, facility. Parts are imported through the Port of Savannah.
GPA played an important
role in that launch with Kia’s inbound parts from its global supply chain to supporting its export of finished vehicles to current and future markets. Through vertical
integration – parts in via Savannah, autos out via Brunswick – Kia takes advantage of Georgia’s extensive road and rail infrastructure, as well as its broader network of shipping line services. “Kia has been a valued
customer for the Port of Savannah since 2009, when KMMG first began producing vehicles for the domestic U.S. market in West Point, Georgia,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. “Their decision to export the
