LIVE 24-SEVEN BEV BEVAN'S CD PICKS - FEBRUARY 2020

CHARLEY PRIDE - BURGERS AND FRIES / THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF HANK IN ME / THE BEST THERE IS / CHRISTMAS IN MY HOME TOWN ( BEAT GOES ON )

Country singer Charley Frank Pride was born on a cotton plantation in Sledge, Mississippi in 1938. His first profession was that of a baseball player with the Los Angeles Angels, but he switched his allegiance to country music in 1965 when he got a record deal with legendary guitarist and producer Chet Atkins. One of the very few black artists to have major success on the American Country scene, he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley! During the 70’s and 80’s he had over 50 hits on the American Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Staggeringly, 30 of those songs made it to number one!

These four albums are now rereleased on this budget priced double CD package. My favourite of them is 'There’s A Little Bit Of Hank In Me', where Charlie Pride provides covers of such Hank Williams’ classics as You Win Again, I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You, Mansion On The Hill, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry and I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You).

106 THE LONDON AMERICAN LABEL / YEAR BY YEAR 1967. ( ACE )

Another release in this fine series of American recordings from specific years, released originally as 45rpm vinyl singles on the London American label. 1967 was a massive year for me personally when my old band The Move had our first three hit singles that all made the top five; Night Of Fear, I Can Hear The Grass Grow and Flowers In The Rain (which my band Quill now perform on stage).

Meanwhile, in the USA there were an eclectic mix of hits and misses being released on the London label. There are 28 tracks in all including; Cry Softly Lonely One by Roy Orbison; My Old Flame By Nino Tempo and April Stevens; Never My Love from The Association'; Sue Thompson’s remake of The Everly Brothers’ The Ferris Wheel; Huff Puff by The Monkees’ Mickey Dolenz; I’m Indestructible by Jack Jones; Love Is After Me from Charlie Rich and Erma Franklin’s take on Big Boss Man.
