RESET THE BODY we are not gladiators

o here we are again, at the start of another New Year. We will have noticed the extra weight we put on during this time and make plans to remove it or make a total life change
in order to make our lives healthier and forfilling. I worked on Gladiators for 3years, providing massage to not only the Gladiators, also the contestants as well. Massage was an essential part of their regime in order that they stayed flexible and reduced the risk of injuries As we make our way back to the gym, either for the first time or aſter time off, one of the things I advocate is stretching and massage both of which are important as we get older in order to keep all our joints mobile. Te less we move the less we are able to move and can become old before our time. Also in our approach to any type of exercise is our mental attitude, which is what I also work on when dealing with clients to help them recover if they pick up an injury. Over the last few years, science is slowly starting to back up a lot of the anecdotal evidence that therapists had. Science has shown that a massage with a minimum of 2-6hrs aſter intense exercise can reduce DOMS( delayed onset muscle soreness), can increase blood flow for up to 3 days aſter. It has also shown to decrease inflammation aſter exercise, as well as activating genes that promote the creation of mitochondria, structures that are the energy factories within cells. Te fitter the muscle the more mitochondria it tend to have. Deep tissue massage helps improve flexibility and may help with a greater range of motion. Interestingly massage was shown to improve the blood flow of people who didn’t exercise at all. Also we get older the amount of collagen within our bodies gets less increasing our lack of flexibility. Terefore as we start to get in shape for the summer you owe it to your body which unfortunately doesn’t get any younger to have a regular massage and start stretching on a regular basis.
