CHRISTMAS EVE

Christmas is fast approaching and we’re eagerly anticipating the big day. Last month, we shared some of our favourite gift experiences for the foodies in your life. This month, we thought we’d share one of our Christmas food traditions; Christmas Eve fish and chips! Now crisp battered cod and fluffy potato chips might not seem all that festive, but it certainly holds a special place in our hearts.

Every year, we pull on our hats, coats and scarves and head over to the chip shop with a long order list from our entire extended family – typically there’s chicken, cod, plaice, scampi, mushy peas and chips galore. It takes a lot of willpower not to devour absolutely everything on the way back home, and I can’t guarantee that all the chips make it home untouched… But for us, there’s something very satisfying and homely about opening the bags up in our dining room, the vinegary steam wafting out and the whole family piling in with huge smiles on their faces. It gives us a chance to relax together before the big day and it gives the chefs (that’s us two) a much-needed rest before the pressure of the big day.

And where better to go than the UK’s Best Fish and Chip Shop 2016, Cheltenham’s very own Simpsons. Family run Simpsons is celebrating their 10th birthday this year and it’s fair to say that it has become the firm favourite of our family and friends over the last few years. There are dozens of fish and chip shops closer to our house, but none can beat this gem. With their flaky fish, crisp batter and absolutely joyful service, it was love at first bite. We can’t resist a big side of battered halloumi and frickles every time we go either!

Simpsons is so much more than just another very good fish and chip shop. There’s a big focus on sustainability and provenance (they can even tell you the name of the fisherman who caught your dish of the day) and for children, they have a delightful story book explaining where fish and chips comes from. We often opt to dine in their beautiful restaurant, but for Christmas it has to be eaten at home. It’s just tradition.

Whatever traditions you and your family have, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year; full of mince pies, mulled wine, pigs in blankets and who knows, maybe even some fish and chips too!
