HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

Claire Thayers

The advent calendar is open, the advent candle lit and the days now tick rapidly down to Christmas, as the craziness begins…

It’s the time to see the very best in people – and the very worst – and sadly the office party can become a nightmare! One sausage roll and a bucket of beer and the wheels fall off. Mostly those who are in the same drunken stupor forget what they have witnessed, but those sober soles, never forget!

I worked for a law firm in Cornwall and I dreaded the Christmas bash every year. I had to be sober, as I lived in the middle of nowhere and had to drive. There is nothing worse than feeling as though you are on the outside looking in and sadly I would watch in horror.

The Head of Conveyancing flirting with his PA, plus the dad dancing, was too awful to watch and made worse by the beer! Umm, far from attractive, but it was her boss and vino glasses on, we thought it was hilarious! The Managing Partner was cuddled up in the corner with the receptionist…

Stories from those who stayed at the venue included listening to the antics in the room next door and walking down to breakfast to see one of the staff, a larger than life woman from accounts, flat

out under the table, still wearing her sequin dress from the night before, snoring loudly!

Why does Christmas do this to people? 99.9% of the year, everyone behaves impeccably and for some reason, for one night of the year, they turn into sex gods (well in their heads anyway) and inhibitions disappear.

Having worked for this law firm, the most disturbing lesson I learnt was that divorce appointments fill their diaries in early January. Not just about the Christmas party – it’s the financial stress and the fact that families are hemmed into their houses over the festive period and tensions rise.

So, let’s all moderate the booze this year and remember that others have mobiles and WILL be taking photos of you, in whatever state you are in! We all know that social media love those images!

Have a very merry Christmas, but not TOO merry!
