IS Susanna Father Christmas?
I'm pretty sure that in a former life I was Father Christmas. No, this isn’t because of my ever-growing waistline and my sunny disposition, it’s because I have this never-ending love for Christmas. I mean, like serious love, think Will Ferrell in Elf and that’s me, right there!
For me it starts on 1st December. I’m very strict about this. Whilst I will allow some forward planning in terms of design and theming, absolutely nothing should be put out or used pre-December. I always book the day off work and get full-on festive with raucous carol playing and general school girl squealing. My teeny barn is transformed in to a Grotto, completed with a 20ft Christmas tree on the patio. If Father Christmas handed out awards, I know that we would win the biggest!
I then ensure that I have a Christmas movie lined up for each night in December (Hallmark I salute you and your sickly-sweet goodness). Thankfully, my husband is also a lover of all things Santa so he can share in my madness. I’m such a cosy, homebody that given a blanket and a glass of mulled wine I would literally by happy on the sofa for days.
Last year someone introduced me to the concept of the ‘reverse advent calendar’. Each day you put an item in a box and on Christmas Eve you deliver the box to a person or charity in need. For me it will always be the local dog’s home. I loved doing it last year, it was fun ordering items for the pups to enjoy. We dropped it off, but I wasn’t actually allowed to look at any dogs for fear that I would smuggle some out under my coat. We’ll be doing the same this year and I’ve already started filling my Amazon cart with sausages and squeaky balls. I’m also plotting how I can break away from the husband and grab a furry rascal or two, so I can make an early start on my New Year’s resolution to be a crazy dog lady.
For me, this is everything that Christmas should be, a time to share, give generously and most of all be kind and open hearted. Maybe the Hallmark movies are rubbing off on me and I’m getting rather too saccharine, but I know that I’m very guilty of always being “too busy” and put off all the helpful things I want to do. December gives me an excuse to take my foot off the pedal and embrace the side of me I know should make an appearance more often. HoHoHo. Merry Christmas!
