LIVE 24-SEVEN

What had changed on set, and what had stayed the same? For one, we held weapons in a different way back then! As we got ready [to shoot], I reverted to 1991, which is not how we handle weapons now. It was trippy! And, then, we would do a sequence that we’d rehearsed the hell out of, but then there would still be a second unit team shooting, with stunt doubles. I’d think, ‘What are those guys doing? I have done everything!’ For me, it is very hard to give up even a second of character. And in today’s world that is impossible, to have every second on screen. I guess it’s actually a need to control because she is my character. I mean, I love my stunt girls, and I was on them all the time, always telling them what to do because there is a fierceness within me that is kind of unmatched. It was trying to find a balance, between what I was doing and what everyone who was playing me [in the stunts] was doing. But we nailed it. It was a trip.

Unlike most action franchises, your Terminator series has always been female-led. This time, though, it is more than ever, with three female leads. Was that a factor in you coming back for this? Well, I liked the idea of shaking it up a little bit, of course! But it really depends on the actresses you have playing it, doesn’t it? To really sell it and to make it work. And we lucked out. We absolutely lucked out, I mean, we have the two greatest actresses at my side. And the three of us, we’re not Charlie’s Angels, with a shared goal. There is a lot of conflict and push and pull, but I am matched brilliantly by both of those actresses. They are my favourite people in the world at the moment. I feel so absolutely blessed that I got them. We each have our strengths and our vulnerabilities; it’s really fleshed out and human. Because between the three of us, we pretty much cover anything you could think of. Anything you could think of that women could do, we do it. And I love it. I just love the power of those two women at my side.

As well as the new, of course, this is a movie that brings you back on screen with an old foe and friend. What was it like,

being back with Arnold? Had you seen each other much, over the years? Not much. But I’ve always felt an affection for Arnold, and know he’s an amazing, almost uncannily loyal friend. I was there for his inauguration [when he was sworn in as Governor of California] and was very happy to stand up there and bear witness to that. But, you know, our lives have taken us in different directions. He travels in his circles and I really don’t have any famous friends. That’s just not how life worked out. So, it had been years – since his inauguration, actually – since I’d seen him. And I was shocked at how much affection I felt for him. I think we’re closer now than ever. There’s a lot of love between us. And it was just us. You know, one doesn’t look at oneself and go, ‘Wow! The two icons of the film are back!’ You just don’t look at your life that way. I mean, some people might, but I certainly don’t! [Laughs] To others, we might be the two iconic characters in these films, but to me, it was just Arnold. He is so game and still so strong. We did a lot of physical stuff together, and he had just had his heart operated on… And I’m, like, landing on his chest and pushing off! We had fun. More fun than ever, in terms of what we got to do together.

What are your memories of that first Terminator movie, 35 years ago now? I was a bit of a snotty New York actress. And there were people then who would say, ‘Don’t go to LA – you’ll be ruined!’ You know, New York is New York; there is this preciousness about acting. My ‘people’ [laughs] at the time – my agent and so on – were really excited about that film. I was like, ‘Hmm. I don’t know. I didn’t really have an appreciation of what we were doing until I actually went to set before I started. When I did, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. This might be alright.’ I was very like that until, probably, halfway through the film, at which point I was just so deeply engaged. And then, of course, we saw it, and I was like, ‘Okay. Wow. Jim Cameron is a genius… ’ But I really did not know, until I saw the film, that it was that good. We’ve come a long way…
