SUBSEA EQUIPMENT/UNDERWATER INSPECTION Fugro Completes Deepwater AUV Surveys for


Shell in US Gulf of Mexico Fugro has completed several high-resolution geophysical surveys in the US Gulf of Mexico for Shell International Exploration and Production Company. The project required data collection over multiple deepwater lease blocks in the greater Perdido and Mars development areas to support clearance of potential environmental, engineering, geological and archaeological hazards ahead of planned drilling activities.


As the preferred contractor for this project, Fugro deployed a Hugin autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from its purpose-built survey vessel, the Fugro Brasilis. The Hugin AUV is depth-rated to 3000m and equipped with multibeam echosounder, side scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling sensors. As such, Fugro was able to acquire critical seabed information over the project area safely and efficiently, despite the challenging water depths. Fugro also used a mix of onboard and in-house processing resources to meet an accelerated interpretation and reporting schedule.


“Shell’s 2019 AUV survey campaign onboard the t is another example of collaboration between Fugro and Shell to bring innovative technology and techniques to site investigations in ways that reduce HSSE exposure and survey duration, while simultaneously providing superior data quality and ancillary datasets,” said Shell Project Manager, Deanne Hargrave.

A leader in deepwater geophysical surveys, Fugro has acquired more than 172,000 km of AUV data in the Americas region since the early 2000s. The current work for Shell began in July and finished in early October. The completed project totals over 8500km of survey data.


Tekmar Moves for Subsea


Concrete Mattresses Provider Subsea protection systems provider Tekmar has agreed to acquire a subsea concrete mattresses specialist for £6.5m – its third acquisition since floating in 2018.


Pipeshield, which is being acquired from its Founder Steven Howlett, is headquartered in Lowestoft and has manufacturing operations local to its primary markets, including Aberdeen, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.


The majority of Pipeshield’s production activity is undertaken at its new leased facility at Blyth in Northumberland, a major hub for offshore renewables activity in the UK.


Concrete mattresses and associated products are used for the stabilisation


and impact protection of subsea equipment in areas where they cannot be buried. They are also used to limit the development of seabed erosion on foundations, pipelines or in marine ports.


Pipeshield currently employs 25 full time staff, most of whom are technically focused, plus about 15 contractors supporting the manufacturing process at any one time.


Steven Howlett will remain as Managing Director of Pipeshield and has signed a new service agreement, which provides for a minimum one-year service and contains appropriate restrictive covenants for a period of six months following termination of employment.
