Traders at an indoor market in Lincolnshire are going about their business with an extra spring in their step after being nominated for a prestigious national award.
Freeman Street Market
in Grimsby has been shortlisted for the Champion High Street Award for its community spirit, diverse range of traders and customer service. Part of the Great British
High Street Awards, run by The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in partnership with Visa and backed by other partners, the award aims to recognise and celebrate the communities that are working to revive local high streets. Trader Donna Pullan,
who joined the stallholders at Freeman Street Market just over a year ago, is happy to vouch for the generous nature of the market. “I started my business in
September and I wanted to bring something back to Grimsby,” she told local media. “Since I’ve been here the
market have supported me really well. “They have helped tell
me how to run my business and how to promote it as I’ve never had business experience before. “It’s great that Grimsby has had this recognition. “I love the feel of the

place and how everyone helps each other. It’s a great, friendly place.” Freeman Street Market
is one of 12 sites across the UK to be nominated in the Champion High Street category of the awards, and it is hoped that the recognition will help bring more shoppers to the town to buy locally-sourced products and support Grimsby businesses. Christine Taylor remembers going to the market as a child, and is another new recruit to the stallholders there.
She told local media: “I’ve
only been here two months but I’ve found everyone absolutely fantastic. “I have so many memories
of coming to this market with my mother and walking along with bags. “It does need some footfall
and maybe some new houses around here would help. “The people that work
here have lots of character – everyone helps each other and that’s what makes it and gets people coming back. “People have said they
love coming to the market because people are helpful.” An international food
court recently opened at the market, and this too has attracted new customers to the event. Steve White, chairman of
The Enrolled Freemen of Grimsby, said the recognition was a positive thing for the area and was likely to attract more people in. “We never believed the
market would be shortlisted for this award,” he told local media.
“The people at the market
are always trying to do things to help improve the market and make it work. “It’s come out the blue and it’s for everyone involved.” The shortlisted finalists will
be judged by an independent panel of judges along with representatives from the Daily Mirror. Voting ended on October
7, and all of the shortlisted finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in November where the winners will be announced.
