MARKET TRADER, OCTOBER 25 - NOVEMBER 7, 2019

NEWS 19 Retail vacancies plummet in the last 12 months

New job market data has revealed a downward spiral for the retail industry, with available vacancies in this sector plummeting by -25 percent in the last 12 months. According to data from Adzuna,

a leading job search engine, the retail industry has lost a quarter of all vacancies in the past 12 months – a loss of 7,298 jobs – with a -13 percent decrease in jobs month-on- month. August 2019 showed the largest month-on-month decrease since May 2017. Splitting this loss out into different

roles, the data reveals vacancies for management positions in retail have fallen by 30 percent compared to this time last year, with vacancies for retail apprentices dropping by

55 percent and retail operatives dropping by 23 percent. The average salary across the industry (£26,284 pa) has only seen a 0.7 percent increase in the last three years, despite the average inflation rate being 2.62 percent. The current average sits 23 percent below the national average of £34,164. The top five companies hiring for

retail jobs in the UK are: Tesco – 1,275 jobs; Dixons Carphone – 952 jobs; Halfords – 401 jobs; Greggs – 351 jobs; and Sainsbury’s – 334 jobs. The data also looked at the job

market at a whole, revealing that across all industries, the North East of England saw the biggest loss in

job vacancies in the last 12 months. Only Yorkshire and the Humber is bucking the national trend, with an increase of 6.6 percent.

The table below shows the areas with the biggest decrease in job vacancies since 2018:

• North East England -46.3 percent • West Midlands • Eastern England • East Midlands • Northern Ireland

-16.3 percent -15.5 percent -14.2 percent -13.2 percent

• South East England -12.2 percent • North West England -12.1 percent • South West England -11.2 percent • Scotland • Wales • London

-10.7 percent -7.6 percent -6.7 percent

• Yorkshire & The Humber -6.6 percent Doug Monro, co- founder

of Adzuna, commented: “The possibility of a no deal Brexit continues to unsettle the job market. We have seen the biggest annual decline in vacancies in almost three years, with the retail sector taking one of the biggest hits. “The recent Thomas Cook closure has definitely highlighted the struggle that bricks and mortar businesses are facing in the age of online shopping, and our data shows that there is cause for concern. “The retail industry in particular

Tesco is currently top of the pops when it comes to retail vacancies, with 1,275 jobs

is showing little to no signs of recovery, following the closure

of several high profile retailers. The threat of online shopping, automation and Brexit means it will be a difficult flight back for this industry and we anticipate we’ll see the high street continue to struggle in the coming years.

“Aside from retail, the number

of available roles in construction is also plummeting. These two sectors combined are often an indicator of what direction our economy is heading in, so these figures aren’t promising.”

Vibrant market continues to grow

A market in Cumbria has been described as the most vibrant place in town after seeing an increase in new traders setting up stalls. In recent weeks four new businesses have opened in Barrow Market, while another business is now being run under new management. In addition, a former stallholder has expanded into new premises on the

town’s Dalkeith Street, with another two traders also looking to expand. On the back of its growing profile market chiefs are keen to promote it and encourage more shoppers to visit. The market’s Jacqui Armstrong told local media: “We’ve had lots of fabulous new businesses join us this year. The market hall has been said to be the most vibrant place to be in the town centre. “We are very proud of that statement and I couldn’t agree more. The

market is a perfect place to take a stroll through and shop at our many businesses and to meet up with friends and family for a cuppa and a bite to eat.” There are currently 57 independent businesses in the market, and

there are potential plans to turn some double units into single stalls to meet the growing demand. As the popularity of the market grows, traders are also keen to promote a more ecologically friendly form of shopping. Many of the stallholders are now using plastic free packaging, and the recycling of plastic waste has now become a priority issue. This has already been highlighted locally as a good reason to visit

the market, because unlike major supermarket chains the reduction of plastic waste is far easier to address at market level. Mrs Armstrong added: “Our market is adaptable to the changing times

of our high street and our customers requirements. We continue to serve our community, and our traders offer that extra special personal touch that you can’t get anywhere else.”
