34 | BRIDGING AMERICA’S GAP – ADDRESSING THE SKILLED LABOR SHORTAGE
Tere are a variety of organizations working to make high-school students more aware of – and more favorably inclined to consider – careers in the skilled trades. We are very grateful to have the chance to report on one of them in this issue: Bridging America’s Gap. Having founded and later sold two small businesses that helped other businesses improve their profitability, and having served as a senior advisor in the Department of Labor, Brett Melvin is now taking his experience from the SC&RA’s Lift and Move USA program to approach a broader sector of industries.
38 | ROPE AND SLING: AN INTERVIEW WITH STEVE HUTIN
We speak with Rope and Sling Specialist’s managing director Steve Hutin about a wide range of topics: LEEA’s upcoming LiftEx 2019 exhibition, Brexit, retaining skilled labor – even his thoughts about working with editors! With a remarkable track record of year-on- year double-digit growth, and steady expansion of the RSS footprint around the UK, one is well advised to give weight to his words about the industry’s challenges and opportunities. We appreciate that Steve took this time to share his perspective, and we think you’ll find this piece enjoyable and informative.

ON THE COVER: A Liebherr 1750/2 towers over the campus of Syracuse University. Bucker Heavylift Cranes delivered this machine, and an even larger LR11000, to the University’s Carrier Dome, where the cranes are playing an integral role in an extensive renovation of that facility. They are unusually large cranes to be operated in the tight confines of the campus, and have drawn a lot of attention – one student started an Instagram account for “Walt the Crane” and the name caught on. Read more about the project in our Spotlight on page 30. Photo Credit: Patricia Glenn for Wire Rope Exchange.
