the limited ground bearing pressures. The final structure fit with only 250 millimeters clearing space to spare.” Maurice continues: “With significant

projects in busy cities like this, the level of disruption is high when something doesn’t go as planned. So, avoiding delays was of utmost importance to the client. We removed the risk of setbacks through a series of tests and detailed plans. The key equipment was pre- tested at our yard in Schiedam before it began its journey to London, to ensure there would be no unexpected problems when on site. The engineers were provided with an exceptionally detailed mobilization plan that factored in all possible risks of delays, making sure back up equipment was on standby throughout. This plan utilized Mammoet UK’s knowledge and experience of working in London, where safety procedures and regulations are some of the most stringent in all of Europe.” This level of preparation combined with

Mammoet UK’s local knowledge meant that, despite the challenges posed by a compact site in a dense urban setting, Mammoet could successfully mobilize and complete the build of the lowering system in just three weeks. Once this was in place, the TBM was lowered to the bottom of the 35-meter shaft in one ten-hour shift, keeping the project on schedule. Mammoet has also been contracted

to complete the lowering of two TBMs at Tideway East, the third and final phase of the project. The company is currently completing planning and securing permissions to prepare the transport route through central London. Work is set to begin in December 2019. y

rigging sector, as well as his military training,” says Debbie Dickinson, CEO of CIS. He has experience in rigging and hydraulics, working with cranes, forklifts, and other equipment used in the construction and entertainment industries. “There is a great need for equipment

inspections in the entertainment industry,” says Brandon Bowling, with United Rentals Sports & Entertainment Division, which rents lifting equipment to studios for rigging cameras and lights to machinery. Cranes are also used for stunt work. He says safety is as crucial to the entertainment industry as it is to the construction sector. Studios require inspections and extensive operator and rigger training. Brown is an NCCER-certified Instructor,

a Mobile Crane Examiner, an Assessment Coordinator, and a Curriculum Performance Evaluator. His background is in concert stage construction, and the similarities to vertical construction lie in the rigging involved, he says. “On the music side, you raise objects, like speakers and lights, and leave them there for the show. Then you bring them down. With cranes, you’re moving materials to where they’re needed. The rigging principles are much the same.” y

Tele Radio Opens in Brazil, Names Managing Director

> Remote control manufacturer Tele Radio has opened a new facility in São Paulo, Brazil in response to ongoing demand from the region. Tele Radio Brazil will

become one of 16 global operations but, as a subsidiary of the U.S. company, it is the first to serve as a branch of a regional operation. The new site will be located in Itupeva, São Paulo strategically positioned close to Viracopos / Campinas International Airport and major transport networks. The company has named Laercio Neves

(pictured below, at right) managing director of the operation. He brings 18 years of experience in sales management to the role, working for multinational companies that operate in Brazil. Neves speaks Portuguese, English and Spanish, and already boasts a thorough knowledge of industrial automation and remote control systems. An electronic engineer, he has a degree in maintenance management and an MBA in business management.

WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE Neves, who will be joined by sales,

technical support and administration staff in due course, said: “I am very excited to be part of the Tele Radio family and I believe the Brazil operation will soon become the chosen provider of radio remote control systems in the country, due to the extremely robust and safe product portfolio, which is backed by outstanding local support.” Miguel Tellez, managing director at Tele

Radio America LLC, said: “We have been active in Brazil for over a decade now, both through distributors buying from the U.S. and in terms of customers buying machinery in other countries and incorporating our radio controls. However, as demand continues to grow and Brazil looks set to be a hotbed of activity in the long term, it’s important to take our presence to the next level and provide the region with a greater volume of local product and support.” Tele Radio Brazil will offer the full

range of radio remote controls, including the Panther system, which is popular with electric overhead traveling (EOT) cranes and other industrial applications. The primary benefit of the Panther line is safety; in accordance with Cat3-Pld standard, transmitters send repeated ‘stay-alive pulses’ to the receiver, prompting the safety relay(s) to drop if the receiver loses ‘sight’ of the transmitter’s ping (out of range, dead battery, broken transmitter, etc.). Neves added: “Overhead cranes is a niche

market in which Tele Radio is strong worldwide and while that trend will be replicated here in Brazil, we are keen to present the entire range of equipment as remote control solutions for mining, mobile, construction, industrial, and other applications. We are now in a position to put the range closer to the point of use than ever before.” Tele Radio U.S. will provide technical

and sales support as the Brazil entity establishes itself in the market. y
