RSS staff completes training on JD Neuhaus’s new range of Mini Next Gen air hoists, which RSS is now distributing in the UK.
Is the entrepreneur tempted by the volume of lifting and rigging gear that’s moved daily—hourly, even— stateside, or in other overseas hotbeds? “I never say never but there are certainly no plans to go global right now,” he says. RSS kit is widely utilized outside of the UK, however. Lifting and rigging products, supplied to BAM Nuttall Ltd., are being used during the landmark modernization of the Rothera Research Station in the Antarctic. RSS has sent polyester roundslings, webbing slings, chain slings, shackles, chain blocks, jacks, safety harnesses and spreader beams. Te business has also completed Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) inspections on equipment it provided for the Mare Harbor upgrade project, part of the modernization of the military infrastructure on the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory off the coast of Argentina. One can’t engage with a Brit right now and not end up talking about Brexit. “It will impact everyone, especially in our supply
chain,” says Hutin. “Te only way to do business with Europe at the moment is to buy what you need.” Recruitment is a constant headache too. Hutin describes his status as “constantly acquisitive” in terms of personnel but points to the difficulties in finding the right people due to a lack of skills.
He says, “All of the talent is split across a lot of companies so everyone on a growth curve is experiencing the same problems; we’re all in the same boat. It makes it vitally important that a company holds onto its best people, but the climate has created an extremely competitive environment and good people are in high demand. We’re blessed to have a strong team but with that comes attention from business leaders who feel they too could leverage or monetize those skills.” Talent retention is good at RSS, and our interviewee must take a lot of the credit for that—not that modest Hutin will acknowledge as much. Good fortune does get a mention, however, as does hard work, commitment, attitude and belief.
Whether it is RSS, LEEA, the MK Dons or Swansea,
they are the core attributes of any winning team, certainly one that can continue to make light work of the super competitive, fast-moving UK lifting market. y
