BIG MAN ON CAMPUS: BUCKNER’S LR11000 ENROLLED FOR SYRACUSE DOME PROJECT

BY: BOB GLENN, EDITOR S

The LR11000 dwarfs the Dome.

yracuse University has begun work to renovate its Stadium, and Buckner Heavylift Cranes has supplied a Liebherr LR11000 to the site, and supplemented that with an LR 1750/2.

Te Carrier Dome as the stadium has been known, opened in September of 1980. Seating more than 49,000, it is said to be the largest facility of its type on any U.S. college campus, and the only domed stadium in the northeastern U.S. Over its history, it has served as a venue for football (SU’s team as well as regional and state scholastic games) basketball (men’s and women’s teams as well as NBA pre-season games) and for SU men’s and women’s lacrosse. And it has hosted many rounds of NCAA championship play in several sports, along with countless concerts and student assemblies.

By 2009 it was estimated that 27 million patrons had been accommodated over its history at that time. Given its age, and its iconic status for the University and the region, in May of 2018 the University announced an investment of $118 Million to dramatically renovate the facility as part of a larger “Campus Framework” strategic plan to improve the overall physical experience of the campus. Among other Priority Initiatives of the wide-ranging

Campus Framework is the National Veterans Resource Center, expanding the University’s effort to support and empower military veterans and their families. Te Center engages in a broad scope of activities to bring together government, the community and academic research to support veterans on campus and across the region and the nation through educational, vocational and community programs. Tat project will be the first Framework item to be completed. In the case of the Dome, enhancements incorporated in the planning include replacement of the aging roof with a permanent fixed-structure roof that incorporates a translucent section allowing natural light to augment updated interior lighting. Also planned are an improved sound system and a movable, vertically hung scoreboard that can be center-court or center-field in the varying configurations used for specific sports and events.
