LIVELINE OCTOBER

Brighton punk trio Gender Roles kick off their UK tour at Open on the 2nd, promoting new album, Prang. Take your insurance details with you to that one. Local favourites SuperGlu and Bag of Cans will be supporting.

Chainska Brassika return to the recently re-furbished Norwich Arts Centre on the 5th. Eat your greens and enjoy a good dance to that one.

Turn the years back to 1980 on the 6th, when Midge Ure and his band perform the Ultravox album Vienna in its entirety at the Theatre Royal. Obviously this means nothing to me...

There's another T.M.T. (That Music Thing) at Epic Studios on the 10th, this time featuring Morganway, Little Red Kings, Fisher & The Ferrymen, and Sam Coe. Each act performs for 30 minutes, all performances are filmed, and tickets are only £3 in advance. What's not to like?

Brighton quartet THYLA return to Norwich on the 14th, this time headlining the Waterfront Studio. Described as a cross between The Horrors and Blondie, but also compared to Wolf Alice. As always, you decide.

A brand new multi-venue music festival hits Norwich over the weekend of the 18th- 20th, promising an eclectic mix of over 200 emergent and established artists. Check out the Wild Paths website and choose between a Weekend Pass, a Day Pass, or simply cherry pick a Show Pass for the acts in which you are interested. Do get involved and support this exciting new venture. More details appear elsewhere within the pages of this copy of Outline.

Oysterband & June Tabor's collaboration tour calls in at Open on the 24th. Listen to their haunting treatment of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart, and then try telling me that you don't like folk music.

Revolution of Mind was deservedly chosen as a BBC 6Music Album of the Year. Now, Merseyside psych- poppers She Drew The Gun arrive in Norwich for a Pony Up night on the 28th. Shoot down to Norwich Arts Centre for that one.

NOVEMBER

Atmospheric electro-popper Alice Jemima performs at Bermuda Bob's new location above Gonzo's in London Street (Gonzo’s 2 room) on the 1st, heralding a new era for the popular Rum Bar. Alice's

THE BEST LIVE MUSIC FOR THE MONTHS AHEAD

As we pack away the barbecues and the sun loungers for another year, we still stubbornly resist the urge to fire up the central heating for as long as humanely possible. Meanwhile, it is definitely hotting up in Norwich when it comes to live music. The summer festival season is over, many acts are back on the road, and there are more live gigs happening during October and November than you can shake a drumstick at. As Ray Davies might have put it, 'the summer may be gone, but here's my Autumn Almanac...'

new album is, appropriately enough, entitled Everything Changes.

English rock legends Praying Mantis descend on The Brickmakers on the 7th. Formed by the Troy brothers back in 1973, the band became one of the most influential names in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). They are also noted for their triangular heads, bulging eyes, and flexible necks.

Award winning poet, rapper, novelist and playwright Kate Tempest will be storming the Nick Rayns LCR on the 8th, performing The Book of Traps and Lessons. Not to be missed.

Gerry Cinnamon sounds like an alias for an ex-Spice Girl, but those in the know will tell you he is one of the biggest musical talents to emerge from Scotland in recent years. He makes his Norwich debut at the Nick Rayns LCR on the 12th. Support comes from The Coral.

Steve Knightley and Phil Beer bring their Show Of Hands to Epic Studios on the 14th, with Miranda Sykes on bass and Cormac Byrne on percussion. So that's four Hands for the price of two.

Professor Green brings his MOTH (Matters Of The Heart) tour to The Waterfront on the 18th. Fly towards the light

in King Street for that one.

Reel Big Fish bring their lively ska-punk sound all the way from Orange County to Epic Stuidos on the 20th. Remember, if Life Sucks...Let's Dance.

Lovers of anthemic bands like Snow Patrol and The National should check out China Bears at Bermuda Bob's on the 23rd. They are signed, appropriately enough, to Fierce Panda Records.

And let's give a huge shout-out for Primal Scream. With nine top-twenty studio albums to their name, this is Maximum Rock'N'Roll. Get your Rocks off at the Nick Rayns LCR on the 27th.

London post-punks Crows were last in Norwich back in March supporting IDLES at the UEA. They return to roost on the 29th, landing at the Waterfront Studio with debut album, Silver Tongues. Carry on, Crows.

So that's it for October and November. I'll meet you back here in two months time, when I solemnly promise not to even mention the dreaded 'C-word'. In the meantime, enjoy every Wild Path along which your musical journey may take you.
