Hall update
COUNCILLORS heard work at TheMemorialHall is to include a newsurface on the car park. Cllr Michael Stark updated
members on improvements, which have included fitting room thermostats and the refurbish- ment of the hall floor. He said dead treeswould be removed and the stumps ground out. After re- settlement – in about a year – the car parkwill be resurfaced.
backed by members in warning that he viewed the permission as setting a dangerous precedent for further applications. Cllr John Horne said: “It is in-
credible that the borough coun- cil’s officers gave as a reason for granting this permission, that it
was adjacent to the urban area. This is ridiculous. This argument could apply in any situation.” Cllr Skinner said: “I can’t be-
lieve this has been approved. I fear this will be followed by fur- ther applications in this area.” Concern was also expressed by
othermembers about the implica- tions for development
from
Chapel Lane through to the golf course, as the site is close to open land, including that bought by a developer from Kent Frozen Foods.
Parking change ‘no safer’
THE parish council will write to BearstedParishCouncil saying its proposals for parking on Ware Streetdonothing to alleviate con- cerns about pedestrian safety of pedestrians. Bearsted is consulting its resi-
dents on a plan to provide five permanent on-street parking spaces for residents on the road through Thurnham. Members felt Ware Street – which has fragmented pave-
ments, meaning pedestrians have to cross the road a number of times to seekrefuge fromon-com- ing cars – would be made even more hazardous by the arrange- ment. Cllr Ian Shelley said: “Unfortu-
nately, cars have to queue to get aroundtheseparkedcars, making it harder for pedestrians to cross and be seen, and whenmotorists do get a chance to go around, they drive even faster.”

MEMBERS expressed their anger that the A20 and Roundwell had been dug up twice in succession. Cllr Michael Stark said the de-
lays caused had led to some “dis- gusting driving” by a number of motorists. He said: “I assume the New
Roads and StreetWorks Act 1991 means contractors can dig up the roadas they like, but it is annoying. “My wife was waiting at the
lights inRoundwell and two driv- ers decided to go round her; one had to brake hard to avoid a car.”
Delay anger
COUNCILLORS thankedCllr John Horne for drawing up a united re- sponse to the borough council’s Local Plan Review and Defra’s consultation onwater use. Cllr Horne’s reports urge Defra
tomake water-saving devices and the use of ‘grey’ water for house- holdchores a part of planning law.
