Plastic gobbling fish launces its own social media accounts and gobbles 89kg of plastic.
Philup The Fish, the plastic gobbling fish situated on the promenade at Westward Ho!, can now be followed on the major social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram where they can find out what Philup The Fish has been up to. Residents and visitors to Westward Ho! are being challenged to deposit their used plastic bottles into Philup’s mouth, take a selfie and post the picture on social media using the hashtags; #philupthefish and #visitwestwardho. The social media accounts will be managed by Plastic Free Torridge.
Philup The Fish was commissioned by John and Julie Martin who own the Carousel Amusements by the Slipway at Westward Ho! The structure was sculptured by local metal artist Robert Floyd of Hartland. The structure measures 5m x 3m.
Torridge District Council have announced that Philup has collected 89kg of plastic since the start of the school summer holidays. Collected plastic will be processed by Torridge District Council and recycled for a further use.
Philup The Fish was recently visited by the DIY SOS who were impressed by the workmanship and the work being done in Westward Ho! to keep plastic off the beach. “We are delighted with Philup The Fish”, commented John Martin. “The sculpture looks fabulous and its popularity grows weekly. It is really important to Julie and myself that the beach we overlook is looked after. Keeping plastic off the beach and recycling plastic for a second purpose is so much better than seeing it disappear to landfill or incineration. Every beach should have one.”
“So far Philup has eaten 89 kg of plastic bottles”, stated Nick Laws, Torridge District Councillor for Westward Ho! “Given that an empty plastic bottle weighs only an ounce or two, that is hundreds and hundreds of plastic bottles that could have ended up floating around in the ocean, now they are going off to be recycled.” “We are so pleased to see Philup The Fish on the Promenade,” added Sadie Davies, Plastic Free Torridge. “To see a local business recognise the plastic pollution crisis and take action like this is very inspiring. We hope to see the plastic collections rise and rise.”
