Folkestone & Hythe District Council has achieved a Silver Award from the Ministry of Defence, in recognition of its support for the armed forces community. The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme acknowledges companies who employ and support those who serve veterans and their families. The council earned the honours due to the many forces-friendly measures it has in place, including a reserves forces training and mobilisation policy. Cabinet member for communities and deputy leader Councillor Jenny Hollingsbee, who is also the council’s armed forces champion, said: “It is a great honour for Folkestone & Hythe District Council to receive this award. We are extremely proud of our long-standing connection with the armed forces, and it is only right we support those within our community and workforce who make huge sacrifices for us all.” The council signed an Armed
Forces Covenant in 2011 to celebrate and extend the district’s long tradition of cooperation between its civilian community and military personnel. • Visit

FOLKESTONE DISTRICT SET FOR MILLIONS OF INVESTMENT
Folkestone & Hythe District Council is making a major investment of £3 million into improving the area’s high street as a community asset. According to the local authority, the scheme will support
projects within the district that promote strong retail environments. As one of the key measures of the High
Street Fund, which will operate over the next two years, Folkestone town centre will benefit from up to £2.2 million of the fund, with the remaining £800,000 allocated to other high streets across the district. The funding split ensures the money has the greatest positive impact on the district’s economy and ensures that Folkestone remains an important East Kent retail centre. Councillor David Wimble, cabinet member for the district economy, said: “We believe this money will support and sustain our
high streets by helping them adapt for the future. With many retailers facing pressures – including from the rise of online sales – our high streets are undergoing structural changes that need to be addressed.” The fund will be used to develop a masterplan for Folkestone town centre, as well as provide funding for capital schemes, key infrastructure projects, and “softer” initiatives to improve the high street experience for all. Property owners and external
organisations can apply for grants between £5,000 and £50,000 for up to 50% of project costs to bring forward initiatives to improve the district’s high streets. • Visit
