At the end of the seventies, momentous change was afoot in Britain in society, culture, politics and fashion and the musical landscape was also going to change forever. Synthesizers signalled a new sound and at the heart of the seismic leap were two records that set templates for the future to follow: Visage’s single Fade to Grey from the band’s debut eponymous album and Ultravox’s single Vienna from the album of the same name. Both were co-written, recorded and produced by Midge Ure. I chatted to him ahead of the tour to talk about that magical period of music and how he seemed to be at the centre of many musical milestones, to include Band Aid.
