ussian painter and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky once said: “Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.” Until the 1970s, it


was generally accepted that the effects of colour on our mood and behaviour were subjective and unpredictable. However, when Angela Wright started to explore this notion, she identified links between patterns of colour and patterns of human behaviour. In 1984, Wright developed a theory that our response to colours is not random, but rather a scientific reality based on mathematical correlations.

In the early 90s, Wright established that there are four personality types which each have an affinity with one of four distinct colour families. This system became known as the Colour Affects System and has since been used in every aspect of business from corporate communication, retail and workplace design, to web design, product design and interior design.
