AUGUST 2019 THE RIDER/ 9 INSIDE The Pioneers Of Rodeo I Remember Archie McArthur

By George Hewitt The date was the fall of 1997. We were celebrating

the 40 year anniversary of Ontario Rodeo Association. Lets back up another 45 years or so, to discover how this all got started. Way back then, Archie McArthur, LeRoy Kufske and George Hewitt got together and developed a plan. A Cowboy Protection Plan. The year 1957. We sat around in Archie’s small travel trailer. I laid it all out. Guys, this is what is going on in the States with Rodeo. I had made a special trip back up to Ontario for the

upcoming Bar 11 Ranch Rodeo. I drove up from the United States where I had been riding for the past couple of years. Down there every State has a Rodeo Association with the top Professional “Rodeo Cowboy Association” or RCA as the cowboys called it. Both Archie and Kufske got real interested. “What do we need to do?” ask LeRoy. “Simple, I answered, we need help. We need a couple of guys with credibility to front this thing.” To be honest not one of us suggested that we were filled with credibility, al- though the credibility bar was important it was just one of the obstacles we faced. Archie added “How about Don Lawrence? He has a suit and white shirt and has a good job.” That’s it, now how about Roy Ionson, I suggested, he is the President of the Western Horse Association and he has a suit.” On and on we went putting it together. The plan was shaping up. Lets leave it here for now, to be con- tinued.

Archie mused. “We had a ton of fun we did, ex-

ceeded only by the number of injuries we suffered along the way. But it was all part of our world. We were always broke. I mean dead broke. However the Rodeo Secretaries in Ontario would allow George and me to enter the Rodeo events with an IOU because they figured that between the

on. As long as you two keep coming we will never lose mone,” he added. Archie was really pissed at me, again. In fact he drove all the way home. Archie hated to drive. When I asked him about his driving this time he said “If you were driving and stopped to ask directions you would ask some dumb question as usual and we would be lost

forever.” Archie got over it eventually...I think. I hope you continue to read about the “PIONEERS

two of us we would likely win enough to pay our entry fees when we left following the Rodeo.” One time I asked the Rodeo secretary “what happens

if we don’t win any money then you guys running the Rodeo will lose money right?” Archie was not happy with me asking dumb questions. “Lets’ go George.” But I con- tinued. “What if we go a long time without winning then you will really lose money right?” The Secretary was getting a little pissed at my ques-

tions and offered. “We have a special section set aside for all the husbands whose wives do the laundry and cook meals for you two outlaws. We sell these seats at a pre- mium price. This section will sell-out overnight. These guys pay a lot of money to sit in this section hoping to see one or both of you wild actors get busted up or stomped
