the Beccles Beats the Ferry
ON Sunday 14th July a team of 67 set out to swim the equivalent width of the English channel and notched up their 32k, target in just one hour and 17 minutes, knocking 13 minutes off the current scheduled crossing time for
ferry between Dover and Calais!
Despite the decidedly cool weather and stiff competition from the Tennis and Cricket finals, there was a good group of supporters down
at the Lido to cheer them on including, former Beccles GP Dr Pippa Harrold, who had swam the channel on her own in 2002.
When the starting gun was
fired by Mr Tylney, 'bang on time' at 6pm, The first in the pool were Beccles Town Mayor Andrea Downes and the deputy Mayor of Petit- Couronne, Chantal Hedou and they were quickly followed by representatives from both towns, each swimming for 25
minutes in one of four groups. The swimmers were of all abilities and ranged in age from seven to over seventy. Nearly everyone exceeded their expectations.
The whole group then went on to complete a grand total of 56k in less than 2 hours, before warming up with a barbecue organised by the Lido kiosk team. The event was organised by Beccles Twinning Association who are raising funds to take
a group of twenty 10-13year olds from Beccles to Petit- Couronne during half term, from October 21st to 25th for a multisport discovery tour. All donations to
UK.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/BTAChannelSwim will be shared with the Lido who hosted the event and who are raising funds to reline the pool.
North Manor Equestrian Centre Established
in 2000, Valli
Hayes has been running North Manor Equestrian Centre for almost 20 years. The centre is full licensed with the local authority and is a British Horse Society approved yard as well as being a Pony Club Centre. Located
in the heart of
Bramfield, just five minutes from Halesworth and only five minutes from the A12 – North Manor Equestrian Centre
is
ideally situated and easy to reach – this would explain why Valli has clients that come from right across the county. Perhaps one of the main reasons you would visit is to have riding lessons. Being a rural county, you don’t have to go far to find a paddock with horses in and so it is not a surprise when people decide they’d like
rider, this is where experience comes in – she pairs the right horse with the right rider. Lessons are available
for
beginners and nervous riders, group lessons, private lessons, shared private lessons and even hacks. But it is worth noting that this is a privately-owned business and North Manor is happy to be as flexible as possible with what they offer. You can even bring your own horse and work to progress your knowledge and skills. For those children who are
to learn. Valli
explains that people start riding at all ages whether they are 2 years old or in their 80s! Of course, if you offer riding lessons for all ages and abilities then you need to have a good selection of horses and ponies. Here at North Manor you will find just that, starting with two Shetland Ponies for the smallest of starters up to much larger horses for those who are more able and looking to further their skills. This is an important point, Valli explains that horse riding is all about the partnership between horse and
pony lovers, this is the perfect place to enjoy a pony party! Come and enjoy spending time with the ponies, riding, feeding and grooming them and then make the most of the peaceful surroundings and have a tea party in the garden. Again, there
simply give the team a call and discuss what you would like to do.
One of the major advantages of being where we are is that the coast in only 20 minutes down the road. Special packages could be arranged for beach and forest rides, please discuss with North Manor for further details. Whether you are looking
to start lessons for the first time, are an experienced rider needing a little help to further your skills and knowledge or are looking for some
one-to-one help with
some
specific issues, this really is the place to come. Please give Valli and the team a call on 01986 784552 or visit www. northmanorequestriancentre.
