CD PICKS - AUGUST 2019 Hallelujah – The Songs of Leonard Cohen (ACE)

This covers compilation features 18 eclectic interpretations of songs written by Canada’s much- missed poet laureate, including two that the man never recorded himself.

To quote the late, great Leonard Cohen, “My songs have come to me. I’ve had to scrape them out of my heart. They come in pieces at a time and in showers and fragments. I can put them together into a song and I have something at the end of the evacuation. I’m just grateful for having it. It tells me where I am and where I have been.”

Favourites of mine include title track Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley); Bird on a Wire (k. d. Lang); Sisters Of Mercy (Dion); Hey That’s No Way To Say Goodbye (Judy Collins) and Everybody Knows (Barb Jungr). Then there’s Suzanne (Nina Simone); First We Take Manhattan (Joe Cocker); Avalanche (Nick Caves and The Bad Seeds); Famous Blue Raincoat (Marissa Nadler); Tower of Song (Marianne Faithfull).

K T Oslin – 80’s Ladies / This Woman / Love in a Small Town (Beat Goes On)

American country singer/songwriter K T Oslin was born Kay Toinette Oslin in 1942 in the small Arkansas town of Crossitt, moving to Mobile, Alabama and then to Houston, Texas. Her early musical influences were Hank Williams and The Carter Family. Drama school led to a part in the chorus for the Broadway production of ‘Hello Dolly’, starting Betty Grable and more Broadway bit parts followed, as well as recording commercial jingles. She began songwriting in the mid-seventies and soon built up an impressive portfolio.

104

Gail Davies recorded her song, Round The Clock Loving and The Judds recorded her composition, Old Pictures, before K T Oslin had a country hit of her own with 80’s Ladies. More hits followed on the American Country Charts, including I’ll Always Come Back, Hold Me, Love in a Small Town and Do Ya (not to be confused with recordings of Do Ya by my old bands, The Move and ELO).

Emerald Sabbath – Night Star (PHD)

This is an amazingly good new album envisioned and created by Michael Suilleabhain – a very talented record producer and also a hugely massive fan of Black Sabbath. In his words on the liner notes of this album Michael says, “I have seen Black Sabbath a total of 82 times. I also have a great passion for classical music and in 2015 I decided to re-record Black Sabbath tracks and instrumentals with as many ex members of Black Sabbath members as possible.” I am proud to be one of those ex members.

The end product is this new album, Emerald Sabbath Ninth Star, a wondrous and very eclectic mix of heavy metal music and classical music, featuring 11 tracks. The album opens with a version of my old friend Tony Iommi’s instrumental, Embryo, featuring Adam Wakeman (Rick’s son) on keyboards, Laurence Cottle on bass, Amelia Sutcliffe on violin, Sarah Tobias on flute & clarinet and me on percussion.

The second track, Die Young, was one of my favourite songs to play when I toured with Black Sabbath in 1983/84/86. Musicians here include Ron Keel on vocals, Rudy Sarzo on bass and Vinny Appice on drums. The lovely instrumental, Fluff, again features Sarah Tobias on flute and clarinet, plus Pete Rinaldi on guitar and the Ardenton String Quartet. Trashed, another song from my touring days with Sabbath , when Ian Gillan was lead vocalist, has Ron Keel on vocals, Vinny Appice on drums, Laurence Cottle on bass, Pete Ronaldi on guitar and yours truly on percussion.

There’s another beautiful instrumental up next, Stonehenge, which includes Rick Wakeman on keyboards (who toured with Black Sabbath on their farewell world tour). She’s Gone, is one of my very favourite tracks on this album, with ex-Redcaps vocalist Dave Walker handling the vocals superbly and my old friend Neill Murray on bass guitar. In For the Kill, features Tony Martin on lead vocals (who I worked with when Sabbath played Athens football stadium in 1986).

Congratulations to Michael Suilleabhain on putting together this fabulously unique piece of work – truly a true labour of love.
