“The lakes have always been a special
place for people to get together,” Denise says. “Who doesn’t like being by the wa- ter? Whether you’re on it or in it, I just feel better.”
Popular sport
As with any activity, it’s important to become familiar with the equipment and practice safety precautions. Kayakers should wear a life jacket
and watch for boat traffic and weather pattern changes. Those new to kayaking should consider taking a kayaking course.
The Bull Shoals-White River State
Park offers an introduction to the essen- tials of kayaking class throughout the summer and into early fall. The class is taught by an instructor certified through the American Canoe Association, a member-based nonprofit organization that promotes fun and responsible ca- noeing, kayaking and rafting. The six- hour class includes two hours of dry land instruction and four hours of water
instruction, says Julie Lovett, Bull Shoals-White River State Park ranger interpreter, who is also a certified in- structor for the course. Class participants learn about plan- ning a trip, equipment and safety, prop- er strokes and self-rescue. They also learn about how to read a river and how to avoid obstacles, among other benefi- cial information.
“It’s becoming an increasingly popu-
lar sport,” Julie says, adding that a kayak offers freedom and stability on the wa- ter.
Information about registering for the
kayaking class can be found on the park’s online event calendar or by calling the park.
The Ozarks offer so many places to
paddle, with area lakes being just one place to connect with nature and make fun memories. “We see people who came here as kids bringing their own kids,” Denise says. “You want to see those memories build over a lifetime. A lot of great mem- ories are made on the lake.”
