“It has exploded in the last 10 years,”

says Denise Weber, who owns and oper- ates Jordan Marina with her husband, Dan, and their three children. This year marks their 20th season owning the ma- rina.

One reason for the surge in popularity

is the availability of kayaks, as they are easily found for sale at outdoor and big- box retailers. Another reason may be the price compared to a boat. “It gets people access to the water,” Denise says. “A couple hundred bucks and you’ll be in the water.” Others in the area have seen lake kay- aking increase in popularity. “As a resort owner, I can’t tell you the amount of people that pull in for their stays with kayaks,” says Greg Wein- mann, owner of Hand Cove Resort and vice president of marketing for the Nor- fork Lake Chamber of Commerce. “I have seen a noticeable increase over the past couple of years.” While a boat allows you to enjoy the

lake’s landscape, a kayak allows you to enjoy nature up close. As you paddle near the shore, you can see animals like fish and tadpoles. Because of this, some prefer to fish from kayaks.
