European road freight volume growth slows
OVERLAND Transport Intelligence’s (Ti’s) latest report, European Road Freight Transport 2019, reveals that the European road freight market saw a slowdown in volume terms during 2018, with real growth below 3% and further declines expected this year.
IN THE AIR International Air Transport Association (IATA) data for global air freight markets shows that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers, decreased by 3.4% in May 2019, compared with the same period in 2018. This was a slight improvement on the 5.6% contraction in April.
The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) is establishing a new working group to define and deliver a sustainability programme for the air cargo industry. To support the initiative, TIACA has signed a long-term partnership agreement with CHAMP Cargosystems.
The UK risks losing up to 120,000 jobs from the aviation sector over the next two decades if it does not improve competitiveness, according to a new IATA report,
which cites the lack of airport infrastructure in southeast England as a major negative factor.
IATA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Animal Transport Association (ATA) to encourage industry adoption of IATA’s CEIV Live Animals Certification. Under the MoU, ATA will encourage its members to pursue attainment of the CEIV Live Animals certification programme, which establishes baseline standards protecting animal welfare in handling and transport.
ON THE OCEAN The escalating US-China trade war may be bad news for the transpacific container trade but should result in higher volumes of intermediate goods as supply chains become more fragmented with the diversion of manufacturing to other markets, according to analyst Drewry.
