UK importer and exporter population – trade in goods

HM Revenue & Customs has produced interim figures for the UK 2018 importer and exporter population trading in goods

One positive outcome of the Brexit debate is the increased focus on trade and the role of freight forwarders within it. The immediate problem that we encounter is that statistics are notoriously out of date; for instance the 2017 figures were only released in November 2018. The figures are relatively stable, but what is

essential is to differentiate between those trading in goods and those in services. However, HM Revenue & Customs has produced interim figures for the UK 2018 importer and exporter population trading in goods. In 2018, according to available statistics there

were 306,000 businesses who traded goods, broken down as follows: • 223,000 businesses traded with EU member states and 156,000 businesses traded with non-EU countries,

• Of the 306,000 businesses mentioned above, 150,000 traded only with EU member states, 83,000 businesses traded only with non-EU countries and 73,000 businesses traded with both,

• 247,000 businesses imported goods and 158,000 businesses exported trade goods,

• 148,000 businesses only imported goods, whilst 59,000 were solely engaged in exporting products and 99,000 businesses engaged in both activities. Looking back at previous years, and especially

the 2017 figures, 35% of exporting businesses were over 20 years old; these entities contributed 72% of export trade. Businesses under two years old made up 7% of the exporter population, but only contributed

1% of export trade. Regarding employment in the sector in 2017,

there were 12,344,558 people employed by companies engaged in international trade. Between 2016 and 2017, across all sectors there was a 2% fall in employment. However, the biggest falls were in those companies with over 250 employees which say employment fell on average by 3%. By sector, the single biggest decline was in the machinery and equipment sector, which saw a 4% fall in employment.
