W The SouthWest Chat

elcome to the July issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. With the Texas heat comes the horse shows. There are horse shows running at just about every facility, every

weekend. I’ve had the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. It’s been a great June. Unfortunately, I have been witness to a disturbing trend.

Guilty until you prove yourself innocent if you have enough money to do that. Think about that. Guilty until you prove your- self innocent. I’ve had multiple calls over the last several months about Association members being treated just like that regard- less of how the police ruled on an incident. There have been sus- pensions handed out to whistleblowers and to victims while the assaulters go unsuspended and unpunished. A wise man pointed out to me, when it comes to Associations handing out suspen- sions in many cases all you need to do is follow the money or the political agenda. And in the cases that I am researching, that couldn’t be more true. Before you say, hey that would never happen to me, let me

warn you. The people I have interviewed never in a million years thought that they would be suspended. In both cases above, po- lice reports were filed and it was pretty clear cut . . . until it was- n’t. The whistleblower was caught up in the follow the money scenario and the victim was swept up and kicked out because the assaulter was better politically connected. Does this bother you? What is even scarier is the fact that a new player called Safe-

Sport is allowing Associations even more power to enforce sus- pensions based on hearsay, slander and revenge without due process. Lives are being ruined by this nightmare legislation. Wake up. As horsemen, we face many challenges from out-

side influences trying to condemn our equestrian sports. When we allow our leadership to make poor decisions, we are im- ploding our sport from within. Exhibitors are leaving Associa- tions in droves and frankly I don’t blame them. Again, I say, WAKE UP! w
