Pro tinmo gWelshmeat toco sumers inthe UK

n by Rhys Llywelyn, Head ofMarketing, Hybu Cig Cymru

AS part of ourwork promotingWelshmeat to consumers in the UK market and communicate the strengths of the Welsh brands, HCC conducts research to help identify public attitudes. A recent opinion poll of 1 ,5 0 0 UK adults,

conducted by respected market research specialists BMG Research and designed to be demographically representative of the population, gives us a range of findings; some challenging, but a great many of them positive. While some of the figures will be used in

order to help combat some of the negative press stories issued by red meat’s enemies, a number of the headline results have already been released. Importantly, consumers overall have very positive

views of the high standards to whichmeat is produced in Britain, and they’re concerned that Brexit may lead to lower‐quality imports. 5 3 per cent of respondents to the poll said that they

were somewhat or very concerned about the impact of Brexit on the quality of the food they eat, whereas only 8 per cent were not at all concerned. When asked about Welsh meat, 7 9 per cent correctly identified that livestock in Wales was mostly grass‐fed,

and our production methods also stacked up favourably when compared with our competitors. Prospective UK consumers ranked home‐

produced meat top when asked to rank different countries’ farming standards when it came to their impact on the environment. Welsh and English farming were perceived as

more sustainable than farming in the USA, South America, New Zealand and Australia. This finding may be important in attracting future consumers. Overall, British buyers regard cost and quality as the two most important factors in their purchasing decisions, but among the younger age groups were noticeably more concerned about

credentials of their food. The positive findings of the poll reflect other research

by Welsh Government and others who have found that theWelsh Lamb brand in particular is very strong across the UK, in terms of the public’s perceptions of its quality, sustainability and traceability. Many of HCC’s poll findings have already been made

public, and strengthened our engagement with the UK food industry at recent key events such as IFE in London, Blas Cymru / TasteWales at CelticManor, and a series of supermarket engagement activities in conjunction with Welsh Government.

It’s been a busy month with around 5 0 0 members enjoying two dinners, one in the North and one in South. It

gave us a chance to socialise and we realised just how important people are within communities. Catrin Stevens is in the process of publishing a book on the history ofMerched yWawr between 1 9 2 0 and 1 9 6 0 . Life has

certainly changed beyond recognition and we look forward to seeing the finished product in September. As the spring brings better weather, it’s an ideal time to get out and about and collect things that can be recycled so that we can make our communities even better places to live within.

in Wales mainly to do with greening and the main changes for 2 0 1 9 will be: 1 A new crop code ‘FA6 : Fallow ‐ Non Greening (Crop to be planted before July 1 5 )’ has been introduced to allowsowing crops on fallowland before July 1 5 . This is not eligible for EFA. 2 Preliminary Check letters will not be issued in hardcopy from2 0 1 9 onwards. They will be issued via RPWOnline only. The vast majority of farmers should already have

received their 2 0 1 8 payment and they should check their statements carefully for errors. If you have made changes to land parcels for 2 0 1 9

you must inform theWelsh Government of transfers within 3 0 days of the change(s) taking place. You can do this by completing a ‘Manage My Land’ submission, using your RPWOnline account to notify any changes to ownership or tenures of land or to register new land or notify changes to permanent features or field boundaries. You must declare only the land you have at your

disposal on May 1 5 , not any land you own, but have rented out. Youmustn’t declare land that you occupy if the tenancy has expired by the cut‐off date. RPWwill carry out initial checks on your submitted

SAF to identify any differences between your declaration and the mapped field information held. RPWwill also check to see if any of the land included on your SAF has also been declared by another claimant. Letters will be issued under ‘Preliminary Checks’,

on RPWOnline only, as soon as possible afterMay 1 5 and you will have until June 1 9 to respond with changes to your SAF declaration for the fields shown in the letter. If you are a new entrant or a young farmer, you

may be able to apply for extra entitlements fromthe national reserve ‐ see the Welsh Government website for the criteria. Remember youmust complywith cross compliance

rules to receive the Basic Payment andwith Greening to draw the additional Greening element currently funded by a 3 0 per cent ‘top slice’ of theWelsh Direct Payments (Pillar 1 ) budget.
