PULSE Cricket in Kent

It’s a huge summer for cricket – we’ve got The Ashes and the Cricket World Cup both being contested on home soil! The Kent Men’s First XI will compete in Division One of the County Championship for the first time since 2010, and the Kent Women are looking to add to their impressive haul of 10 pieces of silverware since 2006 (as well as 3 years as runners up in the same time frame).

In 2019, we also expect to see the largest number of girls only teams enter the Kwik Cricket festivals which are set to receive some Cricket World Cup ‘glitz and glamour’. If girls are looking for a positive role model in sport, then Cricket has spoilt the girls of Kent over the years, Charlotte Edwards, Tammy Beaumont and Lydia Greenway have all set records with both Kent and England. And how special it was to see Tammy, who started her journey at Sandwich Town Cricket Club play at The Spitfire Ground vs. South Africa last summer and hit a match winning 105!

So how can you make cricket a positive experience for girls in your school this year? Well, The Chance to Shine programme currently provides direct coaching opportunities to around 100 schools across Kent, including four London Boroughs.

However, if your school isn’t one of those, every teacher in the county can access the abundance of high-quality resources that are delivered by the Kent Cricket staff in local schools.

Chance to Shine, a nationwide charity which aims to give all children the opportunity to play and learn through cricket. As such, the resources were co- written with the Youth Sports Trust and Create Development and are designed for teachers, not coaches. Each session comes complete with links to the national curriculum, suggestions for differentiation, adaptions for space and equipment, plus detailed videos to help visualise what the different games should look like. To access these resources, visit teachers. chancetoshine.org and click ‘Not a member’ to register for free.

We’re fortunate that the England Women return to Canterbury again this summer, where potentially, four Kent Women will be wearing the three lions at The Spitfire Ground, St. Lawrence.

Speaking about hosting an Ashes WODI, Kent’s Director of Cricket, Paul Downton said:

“To host England and Australia, the two best

women’s international sides in the world, in an Ashes match at The Spitfire Ground, St.

Lawrence is an honour and something we are all looking forward to immensely. The interest in this England side

after their 2017 World Cup win has rightly put them in the spotlight and it is fantastic the see the women’s game take such strides forward in

popularity and participation over the last few years.’’
