Thorvaldson Care Center celebrates 60 years of caring for the elderly
I
n was June 1959, when the Thor- valdson family decided to go into the business of caring for the elderly.
Family has been the key to success of the Thorvaldson Care Center since the very first day.
These past 60 years have been an inter-
esting journey for our three generations of the Thorvaldson family. Herman Thorvaldson and his parents,
Valdi and Lilja, purchased a 38-bed con- valescent home which had been owned by Herman’s aunt since 1932. Lilja worked as matron and licensee of the home. Valdi and Herman helped in various capacities, doing what they could while they worked fulltime elsewhere. It was an ambitious and arduous task began for our family. At this same time (1959), the Nurs- ing Home Association of Manitoba (now known as the Long Term and Continu- ing Care Association of Manitoba) was founded. Herman was one of the original members and held the position of chair- man from 1962 to 1978. In that same year, he was also a founding member of the Canadian Long Term Care Associa- tion which is now located in Ottawa. In 1980, the provincial government decided to sanction and fund only new- ly built care facilities, so being an older
age in their current living situation, yet are not ready for placement in a Personal Care Home. This facility provides 24- hour care/support by on-site health care aides and a full-time registered nurse for those who need assistance managing with physical limitations, or cognitive issues. Residents receive comprehensive support with the activities of daily living includ- ing medication administration, bathing, dressing, grooming and hygiene. Meals, housekeeping, laundry and recreational activities are provided. We have been privileged to be of ser- vice in providing compassionate care for seniors who are

home, the decision was made to sell the original property. As a result, the operation relocated a short distance away to Stradbrook Ave. in the Osborne Village area. Herman and his wife, Julia continued to care for elder- ly, operating as Thorvaldson Care Center. an ‘Intermediate’ Care facility, catering to those elderly who were at a lighter level of care than the original nursing home.
Now operating as the Thorvaldson Nursing Homes (at numbers 5 and 7 Mayfair Place) and into the third genera- tion, with daughters Jocelyn and Karen involved, our family continues to operate as the only Intermediate Care facility in Manitoba. The Center provides a higher level of health care and supervision than other housing options in the community for those who are no longer able to man-
at a particularly vulnerable time in their lives, and we have worked earnestly to maintain integrity throughout the years. Over the past six decades, our goal
has always been to provide a moderate- ly-sized,
non-institutional environment
with the services to meet the needs of those in the later stages of life. We seek to maintain a quiet, comfortable atmo- sphere where our residents can feel cared for and safe in a home-like surrounding. We strive to maintain the health, vitality and quality of life of each of our residents. We have been blessed with good staff, good luck, and a good reputation.
