spective. We all need good relationships with others, to connect with them and to try and help them deal with what they are facing in life. Too many of our friends are facing a variety of crises and need our support. We need to uplift them, make them laugh and offer to be there for them. These connections are vital to their well-be- ing, as well as our own. They count on us for the security of knowing that, if they are in need, we can be there to support them in every way. Some of our friends are facing the crossroads of having to secure a place for a loved one in a care facility. This is not an easy decision. It is met with anxiety and a great deal of

turmoil in their lives. Some have no one to support and to aid them in this decision making. They need us to be there for them as they face this. They need to count on us at this time and we need to step up for them. Some are facing personal health crises and this can be difficult as well. Helping them to have a positive point of view, to empower them to feel good about themselves and to look forward with hope is an amazing gift we can give. When we have faced a health crisis in our home, we support one another and have friends who show us that support. It’s a matter of paying it forward. Both Barbra and I have faced cancer and are well past it now. We both had friends that showed up and gave their sup- port. They were simply there when we needed to talk to someone and get an objective response. There are no guarantees in life and some of the people that seemed to be the most fit have succumbed to things that surprised us all. One friend was an avid marathon runner and always kept his frame in taut muscular con- dition. Not only that, but he was always dishing out advice to others to do more exercise and eat less. In fact he was in excellent shape in every way, except his heart ended his life in a most surprising manner. We were all stunned by his sudden end. Another friend caught a cold. It turned into pneumo-

nia. Thank heavens his family recognized what it was an acted quickly for him. Unexpected events such as this show us our tenuous connection to life. There are so many things that can come forward – you never know! I am not an alarmist and never advocate for dozens of pills or multiple doctors. Rather, I believe you should know yourself and be aware of differences in your personal health. When you feel “out of sorts”, you need to be

A slender thread holds us to each other and life

aware of what your body is telling you. We also need to keep active mentally and physically and I don’t mean by joining a soccer league at our age. Keep walking, keep moving, and keep yourself aware and alive. Live for the moment and make every day mean something, whether it’s attending a grandchild’s activity or simply meeting others for a coffee, lunch or a movie. We need to have community around us and stay in touch with those who are important to us. Take the time to call someone today to see how they are or to make a date to go to the Leo Mol garden to just sit and talk. Keeping your mind active may involve doing puzzles,
or reading, or cooking. It doesn’t matter what we do to keep us vital. We have such a storehouse of memo- ries and can still share them with others. Make a new friend or two and learn all about them, or renew an old acquaintance and see what you need to get caught up on. Making new friends is something that we all should do, too. Reach out and find others who are sympatico and whose company you can enjoy no matter their age. In fact having some younger friends is probably a very good thing. Barbra often teases me that I have friendships that be-
gan at elementary school and, in fact, I do. I lost touch with some of them for years, but they are now back in my life. I have also made every effort to make new friends wherever I go. Being a student of life has brought me much joy as I learn about different people and what they face. Some relationships are not based on age but on a similarity of point of view in life. Meeting and getting to know younger people has given me new perspectives, too, and we should all be open to that. This sense of connection is the slender thread that connects us to life and its vi- brancy. Let’s keep that thread strong as we go forward. Bobby Curtola, Bobby Vee, Leslie Gore (whose feet I once kissed out front of her dressing room in the old arena). Davy Jones and Peter Tork (The Monkees), Paul Revere (& the Raiders), Clem Curtis (The Foundations) who literally gave me the shirt off his back while I inter- viewed him at CJOB, and Canadian jazz masters Moe Koffman and Ed Bickert who was born at Lowe Farm, Manitoba. Gordie Tapp (Country Hoedown), and Stompin’ Tom Connors are gone. Folksinger and 60s coffee-house staple Jim Donahue, whom I always referred to as Winnipeg’s Leonard Cohen, left us last year and so did Mr. Cohen. Lest we forget a few other Canadians, Kenny Shields of Streetheart fame, Winnipeg born folksinger and songwriter Oscar Brand. Oh, and I can’t forget Juliette Sysak from St. Vital. You remember her as “Our Pet, Juliette”. Still close to home and close to my heart, I miss my old friend Pat Riordon who made a lot of us laugh for a lot of years. Their pass- ing marks the tip of the local entertainment iceberg that’s melting away. I interviewed bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughn while at the CBC just a few weeks before he died in a helicopter
crash. I got to know Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent of the Zombies very well over the years. Rod’s cousin Jim Rodford played bass in the group. He died after falling down the stairs. So too, did Dennis Yost of the Classics IV. Closer to home, Ralph Watts, a member of the Vaque- ros way back when, as well as a producer at KY 58, when I got to know him, also died after a fall.
My taste in music is eclectic. I like some big band, crooners, doo wop, soft pop, 60s rock and jazz. (Sorry, no opera.) Final- ly, here are a few more musical memory- makers from my past who faced the final curtain. Gone but not forgotten. Lena Horne, Andy Williams, Jerry Vale,
Jim Ingebrigtsen Is It Just Me...
Vic Damone, Alex Chilton (The Boxtops), Gerry Rafferty, Joe South, Etta James, Joe Cocker, Levon Helm, Jimmy Ruffin, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (Emerson Lake and Palmer) and Malcolm Young AC/DC. They were our idols and icons. But, re-
ally, in the end, they weren’t any different from us. Human. So, in the end, I believe
we have lived during the most interesting time in history. Especially when it comes to music. We have all had good times, bad times and never-had times but, the times I re- member best are the memories I connect to the music.
