WORKING YOURSELF TO DEATH!

Do you consider your workspace as potentially having a negative impact on your mortality? Scary thought, isn’t it? There is increasing research in to the health implications of prolonged periods of sedentary behaviour which suggests it could!

The health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle are well documented with many widely accepted such as increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardio vascular disease, less widely known about are the increased risks of mental health issues and certain types of cancer, which have also been linked to prolonged periods of inactivity in recent research in the UK and US.

Many people dismiss these risks because they don’t consider themselves sedentary, they don’t sit on the sofa in front of the TV for hours and are always out and about, down the gym etc. However, if you’re sat at a desk for around 8 hours a day, you are sedentary for a significant proportion of your waking hours, five days a week. With recent research having concluded that prolonged periods of sitting is associated with premature cardiovascular and all cause mortality, independent of leisure time physical activity, adapting our workspace in order to reduce the risk of these health risks at work has never been more important.

Evo Office are working to ensure the successful implementation of adaptive workspaces in the UK as we follow the lead of the US and areas of Europe in the stand-up revolution. It is already compulsory in Denmark that anyone employed in a role which requires being seated for more than two hours, is provided with a sit-stand desk. Across Scandinavia as a whole, sit-stand workstations are common place with around 90% of workers having an adaptive workspace of some sort. Spending in the US on sit-stand desks over the last three years has increased by 160% year on year with overall ergonomic office product sales growth of over 75% year on year.

The dedicated team of designers and engineers are committed to providing adaptive workspaces in order to promote wellbeing in the workplace. For office based personnel, this primarily focusses on the workstation. Height adjustable desks are the most important factor in providing a person centred workspace, for two very different reasons;

Firstly, enabling people to work standing up and change position throughout the working day is key in meeting workplace wellbeing expectations. The Evo Office desks and workstations help promote activity during the working day, not only by allowing standing while working but also providing stand up reminders. Thereby reducing sedentary time at work and reducing the risk of certain work and lifestyle related health problems.

Secondly, and often overlooked, is enabling the workstation to be adjusted to suit the person. Ask yourself “Is a standard fixed height desk suitable for someone who is 5’2” and suitable for someone who is 6’ ?”. No it isn’t ! Not if the person is to be comfortable when seated. Our range of height adjustable desks, enable people to adapt their workspace to fit them. This is critical in avoiding back, shoulder and neck issues caused by sitting and working at desks which are at an unsuitable height. Furthermore, ensuring the monitors are height adjustable by mounting them on counter balanced gas spring monitor mounts, will further reduce the risk of neck issues by ensuring monitors can be positioned at the optimal height for the individual.

It’s not all about the individual either there are also benefits to businesses after introducing height adjustable desks and workstations. An overall positive impact on the workforce can be seen following the transition to adaptive workspaces, people can become more focussed, happier and healthier as a result which in turn increases productivity and reduces sick days.
