ments and wanted his family to join him. Karla was going to buy a tent and air mattresses, but realized it would be more comfortable and probably cost the same to get a camper. “It was ugly,” she says of the 2006
Gulfstream, which she nicknamed “The Wanderer.” “I thought, ‘I need to fix this up.’ It was so fun, I was kind of sad it was over.” At the time, the family lived in the Lit-
tle Rock area, where her husband was completing his neurosurgery residency at the University of Arkansas for Med- ical Sciences, and she was working full- time as a program manager for the Vet- erans Administration Hospital. She sold the Gulfstream before they
moved to the Twin Lakes Area, two years ago. “I loved camper flipping so much, I
thought, ‘I’m gonna do another one,’ ” Karla says.
She found a 1972 Airstream Sover-
eign, which she nicknamed “The Silver Bullet,” and thought it would be a simple facelift project. Instead, she ended up gutting it, and is in the process of con- verting it into guest quarters for their property. “I love the way they look,” Karla says.
“I’ve always loved Airstreams. They’re beautiful and timeless.” Before she purchases a camper, she
texts her husband, announcing, “Look what I’ve found!” He’s even found one for her to renovate, and he jokes that her hobby is the only one in the family that makes money. Other past projects include the
“Route 66 Glamper,” a 1979 Fleetwing with whimsical vintage decor; the “Deer Glamper,” a 1970 Play Mor featuring a glamorous deer and camping theme; and the “Gypsy Rambler,” a 1962 Trail- blazer decorated in turquoise and red
springtime florals. Now a stay-at-home mom, Karla
works on campers during the nap times of her two youngest children. Her par- ents and her husband’s parents live on the same property, and her good friend Lilian Browne watches her youngest two a few times a week. “She is amazing,” Karla says of her
friend. “She’s the reason I get to work on campers too.” Karla keeps meticulous records of
each camper and sometimes digitally sketches out her ideas by drawing over a photograph. “I have fun with it,” Karla says. She orders her decorating items on-
line from Amazon, and when they come in, the UPS driver will text her, saying, “I think you’re working on a camper … do you want all these boxes at the shop?” “I think everybody could have a use for a camper,” Karla says. “It’s a fun
