OUT & ABOUT

‘‘If you have a passion for cycling, come along and experience the wonders of the great routes we have on our doorstep’’

in four club rides each week, with the Saturday proving a popular choice for working members. With 60 members today, there are couples in tandem, families and members of over 50 years in the saddle.

The meeting place is Wickersley Library, Bawtry Road where riders meet at 9:30am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and then depart together in unison. The group venture far and wide with routes including heading to the East, out towards Gainsborough and Retford, encompassing

multiple counties. Often, the group venture out through Wentworth across to Langsett Reservoir or through Doncaster covering Edlington, Spotborough and Bawtry.

The routes are always published in advance on the club’s website and offer a shorter and longer ride for individual choice. Considerable terrain is covered with the minimum distances being 40-45 miles. Though the team do split en route to allow people to go at their own pace, the group are always sure to plan in a pit stop for refreshments, usually in the form of a local café. Each month the team have a meeting to discuss committee or general affairs along members a chance to plan future events and routes. The group certainly cover some terrain at home and away, as some members have just returned from a Majorcan course whilst others will be riding the length of the River Rhine this June in an overseas excursion.

“The club is for people of all abilities and types of bike. If you have a passion for cycling, come along and experience the wonders of the great routes we have on our doorstep,” Dave Buxton, Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Welfare Office said.

Prior to joining the club, his first, five years ago, Dave had only cycled moderately with his family. He has since participated in various Coast to Coast rides and a John O’Groats to Land’s End challenge. Dave is currently gearing up to participate in a 68 mile Tour de Yorkshire sportive in Leeds this May.

The club is inclusive to all, being open to Learn to ride with…

juniors aged 10 + who ride alongside a parent or guardian, with progression to adult membership at aged 18. There are opportunities to experience the healthy competition of sport with road races and time trials throughout the year, though the aim will always be to promote community participation in cycling for pleasure.

Ahead of its 100 year anniversary, plans are now underway for some exciting celebratory events. 13th March 2020 will signify the anniversary of the first club meeting and though the White Swan Inn ceases to exist, it will be a notable date in history. In May, there are plans for a Sportive from Herringthorpe Stadium with cycling activities for all members of the family to participate in. Whether you are capable of riding for 100 miles, kilometres or minutes, there will be something for the wider community to get involved in and mark the quintessential year.

If you want to meet and cycle with others who are passionate about cycling in all its forms, consider joining Rotherham Wheelers, a club with a fascinating legacy.

Membership is priced at £20 per year for adults and £10 per year for juniors aged 10 to 18.
