Choosing the right facial exfoliator

Professional Make-Up artistNatalie Ricciardi provides her expert advice on picking the perfect exfoliator

Our bodies are constantly shedding skin cells (around 30-40 thousand an hour). With this in mind, you can only imagine theamount of dead skin that accumulates if you don’t exfoliate regularly! Blemishes are formed when dead

skin cells build up on the surface of the skin and get into our pores. When combined with the skins natural sebum(oil) black and whiteheads will appear. Of course,we need our natural sebumto protect the skin and keep it healthy but not everyone has the sameskin type so when choosing an exfoliator, be sure to pick one that’s right for you.

DRYSKIN If you have a dry skin type, it is essential that you don’t over- exfoliate as this can lead to further irritation. Limit

yourself to 1- 3 times a

week using the St Ives Fresh SkinApricot Scrub,Boots. Tip: Be gentle when using this product, slowly working across a dampened face with your fingertips.

OILYSKIN Exfoliators containing glycolic and salicylic acid are great for an oily/acne prone skin type. Salicylic acid will help to unblock pores, whilst glycolic acid helps to reduce excess oil and

prevents your pores fromgetting blocked again. The Face Theory Glycolic Exfoliating Cleanser, www.facetheory.comis a cruelty free exfoliating cream, boasting these key substances. It is also suitable for vegans! Tip: Use only a smallamount morning and evening on clean, dampened skin and rinse off with warmwater.

SENSITIVE SKIN An exfoliating toner can be a great alternative to a scrub if you have skin that reacts to harsh chemicals. The ClarinsGentle Exfoliator, John Lewis will gently exfoliate whilst softening and brightening the skin.

Tip: Use once or twice aweek with a cotton pad after cleansing.Wait60 seconds before applying your day or night cream.

LIPSCRUBS With face and body exfoliators being our top products when it comes to removing dead skin,we tend to forget that our lips need a little TLCtoo! The skin on our lips is a lot thinner than the skin on our face and body and are therefore more prone to becoming dry and damaged. Lip scrubs are great for gently buffing

away dead skin and the Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub, uk.lush.com will not only leave your pout perfectly polished, but it is completely edible so you can just lick it off after (Yum!). Tip: Use a lip scrub to prime the lips before applying lipstick to help it last longer throughout the day!
