48 Dartmouth Galleries Spring Exhibitions the nature of life AN EXHIBITION AT BAXTERS LAUNCHING FRIDAY 24TH MAY AT 6PM

Baxters in Foss Street is launching a new show “The Nature of Life” on May 24th from 6-9pm. 10 artists and makers will feature, some known in the gallery and some new to Dartmouth. Owner Sarah Duggan is thrilled to be showing a group of 9 new paintings from local artist of over 40

years, John Gillo, which depict Dartmouth as well as the local coastline. This will be the largest collection of John’s originals for several years. Somerset artist Lucy Howard will also be showing a new collection of humourous paintings, many depicting ladies in everyday home life. Lucy’s paintings are new to Baxters but her cards are known by many of our customers.

Sculpture will be shown in many materials with gallery favourites Simon Griffiths and Christine Cummings both creating new ceramic collections for the exhibition. It will be wonderful to see Simon Griffith’s owls and birds of prey in the gallery again and Christine Cummings has taken the opportunity of the show to make exciting large feature pieces of dogs and other animals.

New maker to the gallery is David Mayne, a sculptor of national repute who creates oxidised steel

groups of trees some with animals, others with people and also cycling scenes, something of a passion for David. Another new sculptor to Baxters is Alice-Andrea Ewing who wax casts solid bronze fruit and nuts. They are beautiful table pieces and wonderfully tactile. Wood artist Steve Mansfield is known well in the gallery for his characterful driftwood birds and we are excited to be showing some new larger pieces that can be put into the ground as well as a flock of indoor birds.

It wouldn’t be a Baxters show without some ceramics and Sarah is very excited to be showing the work of 2 makers new to the gallery. Debbie Barber is a ceramic artist who specialises in Raku and smoke fired ceramics. Her love of pattern and inspiration from the natural world – trees, plants and the birds in her garden influence her beautiful work. Denise Brown creates illustrated vessels inspired by themes from around the British coastline but she has also used the local Dartmouth landscape to translate into designs particularly for the show. They promise to be a wonderful group.

The final artist in the group is one who showed successfully in Baxters for many years. Sarah is very happy

to welcome back Janine Partington and her beautifully drawn copper and enamel panels. These will be available in different sizes and depicting subjects from the natural world.

The exhibition can be seen until June 14th and will also be on the brand new Baxters website and online shop.
