Harleston Primary Academy


WEDNESDAY 20th March was the date of the spring equinox – Earth Day.


Academy children were at the forefront


Harleston Primary of a highly visible


response to the day. Against a sea of colour provided by flags of all nations the young people made a Pledge to do everything they can “to encourage their community and the wider world to care better for the earth and its resources”. “We Are One” is their watchword, recognising that this planet is our only home and communities should work together to safeguard it for the future.


The children launched their initiative at a morning ceremony when, led by the Town Crier, they called on the Town Council to acknowledge their Pledge and to take it on board and take a lead in turning the Pledge into action. Chair of the Council, Cllr Frances Bickley, accepted the challenge,


saying that it would be part of her agenda for upcoming meetings of the Council and that she will see that progress is reported to the schools and the community.

joint pledge, the young people had brought written, pledges of what they could and plan to do as their personal way of helping to keep the earth a safe and healthy home. The “We are One” initiative is coordinated by Harleston and District branch of Rotary International Future.

takes each one of us to act to turn brave words into reality.” More than 70 of the foreign national flags will be flown throughout the town until early April, and the remaining 130 are displayed in an installation high in St John’s Church where, hung by one corner, their colours are on show, but individual identities hidden to demonstrate “We are One”. At the heart of the display is the flag of the United Nations.
