Harleston Garden Club
WINTER vegetables, Pauline Harper runs hands-on vegetable sowing and growing sessions for local nursery schools because, she says, she is an amateur gardener but passionate
vegetable grower
who grows mostly for the kitchen table rather than the show bench. She came to Harleston Garden Club’s April meeting to give a talk about
growing winter vegetables. Why “winter vegetables”,
one might ask, when summer is almost around the corner? “Because”, said Mrs Harper, “you need to plan ahead for winter veg, and sow for winter between spring and autumn.”
The colourful
trug-full of winter vegetables picked that morning from her own garden clearly evidenced
that. There were shallots,
bright pink Swiss chard, purple sprouting and green broccoli, carrots, sprouts, kale, leeks, turnip and more – all crisply fresh and delicious. Mrs Harper described how different
vegetables can be grown from seed to harvest
varieties of many throughout
the months of winter, and she brought a generous table top
of seed packets, catalogues and pamphlets for us to take home, free, for our own kitchen garden planning.
Garden Club events held
earlier this year included a February mini masterclass in fruit trees and pruning from Graeme Proctor;
and a
fascinating history, in March, of the evolution from the 1300’s of garden landscapes, richly illustrated by surviving plans,
drawings and The next meeting early
photographs of lost, surviving and famous houses and gardens across Suffolk.
of
Harleston Garden Club will take place on 14 May when Mrs Harper’s overview will be followed by Trevor Last with advice on basic vegetable growing (for spring and summer – think strawberries or mangetout peas – as well as winter). Visitors are very welcome. The talk takes place in Harleston’s London Road Church hall at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and the visitor fee, which includes interval tea/coffee £2.00.
